Sierra Club started out as a hiking club in the US in 1892. The early members loved hiking in the Sierra Nevada and enjoyed the outdoors. When their favourite places were in danger they turned into an advocacy group to protect the wilderness. The Chinook Group goes back to the roots with regular outings in Calgary and the mountains.

In the past two years our core volunteer team dissolved due to school and work responsibilities. Now we are getting back on our feet. First with outings and soon again with expert presentations, campaigns and more.

What we have done in the past

• Informing Calgarians about waste management
• Working towards a pesticide-free Calgary
• Advocating for the Castle Special Place to protect the unique wilderness area
• Cleaning up Calgary's rivers and pathways to reduce pollution of our waterways
• Monthly speaker panels ranging from tar sands to conscious consumerism
• Fun outdoor trips to show you the wilderness

Our mission

As part of the Sierra Club Canada we believe in the power of the individual to make change. Our mandate is to educate, lobby, and work together for change. We recognize that we are not separate from the earth, but are one with it. With that recognition, we believe that it is our responsibility to protect the earth and health of all creatures living here.

Our goal is to ensure that future generations may enjoy this beautiful area in which we are privileged to live; that we do not destroy its beauty, its diversity, and its ability to sustain us. Therefore, our group is committed to protecting and improving the environment and ecosystems of Calgary and Southern Alberta.
