Sierra Club Outing Leader Training (OLT 101)

This is a training to become a certified Sierra Club Outing Leader.  In order to attend training you must:

• Be a current Sierra Club member

• Be at least 18 years of age

• Be certified in CPR and first aid

This training is the first step to becoming a certified Leader.  You must also complete two co-lead outings with a current certified Leader.  After receiving two positive evaluations and completing this training you will be a certified Sierra Club Outing Leader.  This certification lasts for 4 years.

This particular training is only for OLT 101 which is limited to day hikes and easier excursions.  This training does not qualify you to lead overnight outings, outings that require specific training and gear (i.e. kayak trips, rock climbing), youth outings, or outings outside of the state of Colorado.  For people who may be interested in leading the above types of outings, please leave a comment on this page or email me through Meetup and I will contact you directly with more information.

For people who need to get their first aid and CPR certification, please visit this site and register for an upcoming class: http://www.coloradocprfirstaid.com/cprfirstaid.php Classes are 4 hours in duration and cost $65 (Sierra Club does not reimburse for the costs of certification).  Certification is valid for two years.

We will meet at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center parking lot at 9am.  Here is the website to the Nature Center which has a map: http://jeffco.us/parks/parks-and-trails/lookout-mountain-nature-center/ I have scheduled the training for three hours, but it may take less time depending on how many people we have attending.  This training will be rescheduled if there is severe weather.

If you are interested in becoming a leader and you are unable to attend this training, there will be another training scheduled for the 10th of May.  Please contact me if you have any additional questions and/or concerns.

Had a lot of fun with interesting people. Enjoyed talking with people about their experiences, photography and trail maintenance. Possibly three people interested in working on the Colorado Trail this year. Anyone else interested can contact me at [masked].

are we allowed to bring dogs in SC outings, ie hikes, if I become a hike leader I will want to bring my dogs with me on the hikes. can you let me know before the training tomoro.

    March 28, 2014

    • Colleen

As a leader you can determine what types of hikes you want to lead and if you want to do hikes that involve dogs, then you certainly can and I would encourage you to do so since that is something not currently being offered (no dogs tomorrow though). Do remember that there are several parks and areas throughout Colorado that do not allow dogs and it would be your job as a leader to do research and ensure that dogs are allowed where you want to lead a hike. See you tomorrow!

Brenna, this page has a link to the Center with a map and directions. I don't see the training lasting longer than three hours. Also, I do not own a cell phone so any questions or concerns you'll have to contact me before 8am the day of the training by emailing me on Meetup or leaving a message here. See you Saturday!

Dave, your wife has to sign in with her own Meetup account (which she'll have to have anyway once she's certified) and RSVP. I look forward to seeing you both on Saturday!

Additional Items Before Training: I will need each of you to bring your current Sierra Club Membership Card which includes your Member ID #. This is for the Sierra Club Outing Leader database. I would also like all of you to review the Outing Leader Handbook which you can retrieve from this link: http://clubhouse.sierraclub.org/outings/Common/outings-leader-handbook.pdf
Please do not print out since all of you will be receiving this book after training. I hope all of you are making plans to renew or to gain your First Aid/CPR certification. This is a crucial step to becoming an Outing Leader. See you all next Saturday!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
