Eagle Lake Buttress with Traverse to Phipps Peak - Member Organized

After carpooling from Folsom this adventure will begin from the Eagle Lakes parking area on Highway 89. We will travel to and around Eagle Lake to a south-facing gully directly on the north side of the lake and gain a ridge line leading straight to the Eagle Lake Buttress. We will either take an easy class 4 that goes thru a notch on the left of the summit blocks or we can take a class 3 route on the north side. Next is the ridge traverse from Eagle Lakes Buttress to Phipps Peak which involves about a mile of 4th class maneuvering with possibility of some easy class 5 moves. The option to this is to go straight down from the buttress to an ascending gully to reach the base of Phipps. Upon reaching the summit of Phipps, we will descend directly down to Velma Lake and thru the canyon past the falls and back to Eagle Lake where we pick up the trail back to our parking.

Very fun trip in a place I have yet to explore. Thanks Waide for putting this trip together and, as always, a great group to climb with!

Seems likely we'll be dealing with a little weather while were up there. Not to be overly obvious, but plan accordingly! (shells, extra gloves, a garbage bag to keep your gear dry in your pack or a rain cover, that sort of thing)

Hoping the snow level will be low enough that we'll get snow and not rain while on the ridge, but it sure isn't going to make for good snow conditions at the lower elevations. Wondering just how effective snow shoes and even crampons will be. Following the ridge back might be an interesting alternative if it's safe, unlikely though if we're slow and its wet and thundering.

Looking forward to my first SMG trip! It is my first time back on snow and ice in about 15 Years! My good buddy Mike said I should inquire about barrowing snow gear from the group. I have the boots, just need crampons, ice Axe, helmet and harness. Let me know!

Waide, I can bring an extra pair of snowshoes for someone.

    March 26, 2013

    • ben o.

Rick, that would be awesome, I appreicate it, I've never worn any.. are they adjustable?

      March 27, 2013

    • Rick B.

      Yes, they are totally adjustable.

Sounds like fun Waide! Great idea - we've looked at this route many times from Eagle Lake Buttress. The rock is Yosemite quality granite and the ridgeline is serrated and exposed - should be a great adventure.
