SMC Skills Proficiency Sign-Off

Sign Off Your Skillset Saturday, Dec. 7th. 9am - 5pm, Event Leaders will be available to sign off member proficiency. Join SMC here!

Proficiency sign off better qualifies you to participate in technical events and prepares you to take the next level training.

This is an opportunity to sign off portions of the following skillsets:

RCK 1 - Level 1 Rock Climbing

RCK 2 - Level 2 Rock Climbing

RCK 3 - Level 3 Rock Climbing

MTN 1 - Level 1 Mountaineering

So what exactly can be passed off in each skillset? CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE SKILLSET LIST

DETAILS

This is an official SMC Event only for demonstrating proficiency to achieve sign off. It has no requirements for attendance, other than you bring your SMC Member handbook and any equipment you will need to demonstrate your skills and knowledge. We'll have some SMC gear there for those who don't have a particular item, and if you haven't received your SMC handbook yet we'll provide one.

The queue will be first-come, first-serve. If we have an overwhelming number of folks we'll figure out a way to avoid having people standing around waiting for an EL, either by staggering times or using time limits, so we can get to everyone.

Since this event does not have any requirements or payments, RSVPs will be handled here on Meetup. At this point, there is no limit to the number of folks who can attend.

DIRECTIONS TO AUBURN QUARRY

Auburn Quarry is a newly re-opened climbing area just east of Auburn, CA, thanks to the efforts of CRAGS and The Access Fund.

The lat-long pinpoint location in this posting (above) is accurate. Its the green arrow. To get there:

1.Drive I-80 to the Elm Avenue exit in Auburn.

2. At the light, turn left (east) toward downtown Auburn.

3. Turn left on High Street, which is CA Hwy 193/49 towards Cool and Foresthill.

4. Follow through the next light and out of town and down the canyon as it becomes Eldorado Street / Golden Chain Highway.

5. When you reach the confluence, turn right over the bridge SE continuing on CA 193/49 toward Cool.

6. After driving approx. 4/10th of a mile, turn left at the sign unto on a dirt entrance and down into the parking area.

This is the Auburn State Recreation Area. There is a fee to park here. Or you can park off the highway just below and walk in for free.

7. From the parking lot, head SE through a metal gate and hike along the river for approx. 1 mile until you see a steep side road to the right near a large concrete tower structure. Some folks bring a bike because the trail is a flat wide road.

8. Take the steep hill, turn right at the tee and continue uphill as it switchbacks and reaches the Quarry.

We will be located at the Scale Wall on the left and the Memorial Wall on the right.

It was a wacky day at the quarry (heavy snowfall at times) but we still had fun.

Wish I could be there but my younger brother and his wife had a baby last night! I'm off to meet my new family member. I hope you all can get some climbing done -- it'll be cold and wet.

Due to the weather (driving conditions) I'm not going to be able up to get my gear in Tahoe, so it is going to be difficult to make it up to Tahoe then drive back to Auburn, given the weather.

    All the best

With the bad weather on Saturday, I decided not to make the drive over 80 to Auburn.

Are you still have the board of directors meeting after? There several local favorites I can point you to if interested. I usually go to the Little Belgium deli after recreating in the quarry. Good food and great beer selection (including root beer).

    I'll be there around noonish.

We've had an overwhelming response to this event. I wanted to mention a few things:

1- This Saturday we are having sign-off in the same location. It is part of our annual dinner and climbing event that day. I encourage you to come out to that event instead, since there will be less attendees and quite a few ELs.

2-You should be a member of SMC. SMC proficiencies only have meaning inside the club. To join SMC or upgrade membership go here: www.sierramountaineeringgroup.org/join

3-Owing to the large number of folks attending, we may have to stagger attendance or restrict it to a certain time frame. We will structure it and coordinate with you.

I want to mention that taking training courses is the best way to become proficient in your skills. Also realize you can get signed off on skills on every SMC trip, or even social events such as the dinner, so this is not your only opportunity.

I encourage you join us on any climb, expedition, or event to accomplish the same purposes.

If you successfully complete the RCK-1 are you automaticly signed off for that level?

    October 9, 2013

    • Darren S.

Hi Tom, completing the training course qualifies you to attend RCK 1 events. Getting signed off in RCK 1 is when you show proficiency, that happens as you demonstrate the skill in action.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
