ITINERARY

There will be plenty of top roping as well as options to mock lead or sport lead based on your demonstrated proficiency.

Travel:  There are some small commuter aircraft options that fly into Ouray or Telluride, but your best bet is to fly into either Grand Junction, CO or Durango, CO.  If you haven't experienced the Million Dollar Highway through the San Juan Mountains between Durango and Ouray, I highly recommend flying into Durango.  The drive is approximately 2 hours from either location.  The San Juan Mtns have high levels of snowfall although the highway is often plowed early in the day.  I've been told 2WD is reasonable as long as you're sticking to the highway.

I (Rob) will arrive in Ouray on February 17 and will make sure accomodations are set and will be available to assist with travel to/from Ouray on February 19.  Feel free to arrive earlier if you want to enjoy the area before the  event, but I will not be available for travel assistance before February 19.

ACCOMMODATIONS

As noted above, we will plan to stay at the Historic Manor House.  There is room for 14 of which we have increased the attendance to.  The address and link are listed above.

Everyone will need to arrange their own airfare.  We plan to eat as a group at the house with those interested assisting with preparation, cleaning and cost.

The Hot Springs is within walking distance, bring your bathing suit and a towel.  Nothing like ice climbing by day, soaking in the tub by night.

Wednesday, February 19: This will be a planned travel day to/from Ouray.

Thursday, February 20: We will spend the entire day climbing at the Ouray Ice Park.  We will spend most of the day at New Funtier and Southpark.

Friday, February 21: Full day of Ice Climbing at Ouray Ice Park.  We will spend most of the day at School Room.

Saturday, February 22: Full day of Ice Climbing at Ouray Ice Park.  We will check out the Alcove and whatever other areas people are interested in.

Sunday, February 23: Travel day back to Grand Junction and/or Durango

Hi guys. I know it's been a while but I just noticed I'm missing a green & white 48" sewn runner sling, with "Hooker" written in sharpy. Let me know if you find it.

  • Wayne

Guys, great pics. We all want to see them but there's just too many to look through right now with the dups. My recommendation would be to delete the old album and recreate it. We can also create a second album if it's needed. There's no need to create a new event to create a new album. Let me know if I can help. Glad to see this event was a great success.

I think what's done is done, let us keep what people have already uploaded and add to that. I completely agree with Brad though - please do some QC before you upload and avoid uploading redundant and low-quality pictures.

      February 27, 2014

    • Art

But if the community decides to delete and redo, I am cool with that. I'll be happy to re-upload mine.

We can post our pictures there once we reach the limit on the original Ouray website. Thanks for a great trip, guys!

Hi all, Turns out I am actually arriving in GJ on Thursday at 11:00AM. I have reserved a car and will drive to Ouray. See you all there.

    February 17, 2014

  • mario m.

    Rob/Jay/ Rico
Not to sound un-group -like, but it might be best for Jay to get a car.
If he arrives on time, we'd be looking at heading back to Ouray at midnight, and arriving at approx. 2am( it's a hundred miles)that's not including the fact that we'll be driving mountain winter roads at night.
And to boot, if we all start getting up at six or so, you're looking at approx. 4 hrs. sleep.
Which in turn starts to affect one's climbing performance, and now you're looking at 2-3 sleepy climbers vs. 1.
Just trying to be practical about matters.
    Mario

There are 5 bedrooms, two with extra sleeper sofas so sleeping for 14 if we share and have 2 per bed. If you would rather sleep on the couch or a sleeping pad independently, then bring such items. Otherwise, all bedding is included.

Mario - on Kayak, a large car costs only slightly more than midsize, and will be more comfy for 5 people plus gear. So you might want to get a small one for 2 days, than exchange for full-size.

    To summarize GJT arrivals:
    Rico - Feb 17th
    Mario - 10:30 am
    Rick - 9 pm
    Art - 8:57 pm
    Heidi - 9:10 pm
    Kelvin - 9:10 pm
    David - 9:21 pm
    Jules - 11:30 pm
Based on this, I suggest Rico gets a car and picks up Mario and 2-3 others. The remaining folks get a second car and wait for Jules.
I wonder if we can also ask Rico and Mario to get some groceries? (assuming we are cooking at The Mansion)

    January 23, 2014

    • Rico T.

      January 23, 2014

For 8 people, 2 full-size (5-person) cars would probably be best. On kayak.com, I see full-sized cars can be rented for $53 a day. Does anyone know anything cheaper?

  • Art

Let's take the final head count for GJT. I think we have at least Marco, Heidi, Rico, David, Rick, Kelvin, and me - that's at least 7. Jules - you too? Anybody else - please chime in now. Actually, could everyone arriving at GJT post their arrival time by replying to this message? I think we should rent two cars. Mario can get the first one and I the second. I'm taking the train out to Grand Junction, which means two things; I'm allowed two 50# bags, and I'm arriving at 10:30 in the morning.
So, I can take some group gear and pick up a rental car, as I'll probably first in town.
Fill me in, and I'll do what I can.

I'll be there on Feb 17th late afternoon, would love to share a rental or carpool, if that works.

We should get team jackets to represent SMC at Ouray!

So for cabin accomodations, the only options that seems good to me is http://www.vrbo.com/334049. It seems very appropriate for the setting. I don't want something to pristine that we have to worry about damaging. Also, this seems to have ample bedding (4 beds, 2 futons). Still, we need to share - it's no different than sharing a 2-person tent, right? Let me know your thoughts and if you have other recommendations, please post the URL here so others may view it.

My understanding is that the rental company will try its best to find us a replacement house if this one sells in the meantime. But as Rob says, we'll probably be fine with this one.

Sorry for the delay. We're securing a couple more people for the trip. It looks like the Manor House will be filled to capacity. Once I get confirmation from one more person, I'll prepare the information for convering the cost of the house and arrange payment from everyone.

Mario - thanks for your interest. Sorry - I wish we could accommodate everyone. To be honest, I think you're pretty close to the top of the list if anyone else backs out.

Been researching ice tools. What do you guys have? Do you like them? Any suggestions?

I've had the Grivel X Monster for years. They're cheap & look rad, but the Quark & Viper are like climbing with precision needles.

OK, Grand Junction folks. My flight arrives Wed 8:57 pm; leaving Sun 1:15 pm. I am counting on having Rick S, Kelvin, and Heidi in our car. Heidi, please confirm. If anyone else is flying into GJT - please reply asap, because then we'll need a bigger car.

If you think the minivan can fit our gear, then I think that option is more simple.

I'll vote for whichever way gives us more space for gear with enough seats, if cost is the same.

I prefer to fly into Grand Junction. Does anyone want to share a car rental from that airport (Wednesday - Sunday)?

Art, I will like to share a car as well. My flight arrival and departure times are the same as yours.

Do you guys think 5 people and our gear will fit into one large car? Chevy Impala can be rented for $210 for the whole time. If not, we'll need a minivan. Anybody else for GJT?

Hey Rob, I found flights into Durango (DRO) on Feb 19 at 11:20am or 2:30pm. Do you have a preference since you are helping with transportation. Also, departing Durango on Feb 23 is at 7pm. Will this work? I want to book it sooner than later, so please let me know.

Also want to confirm. Is this the right airport:
