ITINERARY

This event is simply a three day desert climbing event with car camping. Joshua Tree is one of the most popular climbing areas in the US owing to it's thousands of routes and virtually unlimited climbing possibilities, as well as pleasant "off-season" temps.

Preference will be given to SoCal SMC members and those who have signed-off at RCK 1 or taken SMC training courses.

Food will be individual, and we may have a potluck. SMC has secured enough campsites for 24 members. Please pay $10 to help with this fixed expense. You are welcome to arrive when you can and stay as long as you like, but the official event is from noon Dec. 26th to noon Dec. 29. Darren and quite a few ELs will be in attendance.

Thursday, December 26th: Darren will be on site at the Indian Cove Camground at noon to secure our first two sites, with room for 12 folks. We have room to park four vehicles. We'll meet up and do an afternoon of climbing at nearby sites.

Friday, December 27th: We'll secure our third and fourth campsites at noon, with room for 12 more folks and 4 more vehicles. We'll split up into different groups as necessary, climbing all day from sun up to sun down! We'll focus on traditional climbing, but may also climb sport routes, do bouldering, and we'll do lead climbing and multi-pitch routes as appropriate.

Saturday, December 28th: Repeat - more climbing, yeeehaw!

Sunday, December 29th: Last day, we'll need to check out of the campground at noon. If you want to stay longer you are welcome to make your own plans and reservations!

I couldn't have asked for a better group to experience the JT rocks with! This weekend had it all: from sharing conversations, laughter, and gourmet food to learning a lot more about the intricacies of rock climbing and the delicacies of car camping. :) Thank you all for another great adventure!

+1 on that Lindella. The perfect mix. A huge shout out for Darren and team leaders for hosting the idea and all the folks who attended it to make it a memorable experience. Lets keep the ball rolling in 2014. A very happy new year to everyone. Hopefully see you all soon for another awesome event. Cheers!!!

What a way to end the year! This truly was a climb fest. I want to thank all our brothers and sisters in SoCal for all the fun. You guys rock! Joshua tree was the perfect place for this event. Our hosts (Darren, Waide, Kelvin, and Mihai) also did an outstanding job organizing this one. I also want to especially thank Greg (5-fun) Kelderman (our Dutch oven master) for all his hard work on this trip. Who can forget how cool it was when Greg flipped that beautiful upside down pineapple cake out of the oven. That was a beautiful moment and a great memory. Thanks everyone and happy new year!

Probably the most amazing car camping and rock climbing trip we've ever had. All made new friends and several future rock stars were born on this trip - moderate trad routes were led, hard routes toproped, and we even some multi-pitch...Joshua Tree seriously rocks. Most of all the folks that make up SMC are just awesome. My sincere thanks to all the Event Leaders that helped organize, instruct and set up dozens of routes, and of course Greg for all the amazing food and logistics. We will be back here for a repeat every winter!

Have fun down in the desert. A few more ropeloads of Sac area climbers are heading down the same time, we'll say hey if we cross paths with you all.

Hey Justin, sounds good. Come on by to say hi.

Will keep an eye out, thanks Darren! Looks like we're at White Tank.

      December 27, 2013

  • Greg K.

I will bring a few large dutch ovens and cook a main course meal for everyone one night. Usually enchiladas and a pineapple upside down cake-my treat. any requests? Really tasty, easy and fun. Any vegetarians! I should also be able to bring some firewood if I can get it to fit.

    4 · December 16, 2013

I'll bring my pot and burner and make beans.

      December 23, 2013

    • Greg K.

O.K Terry. I will make a batch with beans instead of chicken. Is that O.K.?

      December 24, 2013

  • Sapth

Has the total number of cars been tallied? I think Darren mentioned a limit of 8 parking spots. Bobby and I are driving from San Francisco (starting on Wednesday), getting to LA region Wednesday evening. Heading to J Tree on Thursday morning. Does anyone from LA area need a ride?

Looking forward to some fun climbing!

    December 23, 2013

  • Sapth

I'll bring a small stove and propane cylinders

    December 22, 2013

  • Ben Y.

Hi. I am new to the group so missed out on this but I'll be going down to JT for the first time on 12/30 and staying til 1/3. Is anyone else staying longer who would like to connect? We are staying at Black Rock Campground site #72. I have a rack, 2 70mm ropes, interested in sport, trad or boulder. Also I am 16 and my friend is 14 we climb at GWPC in Oakland.

    December 21, 2013

  • Sapth

Bobby and I are driving from San Francisco on 26th morning. Have space for 2 more if interested in car pooling.

    December 20, 2013

  • Marissa T.

Hillary and I will be taking off from Manteca the night of the 25th and arriving super early the 26th. We only have a two person tent between us and see that camping may be tight the first night so can totally find other accommodations as needed. I have a small gas stove and 70m rope to share. I have few slings and quick draws too, but am not too sure how useful they'll be in JTree.

For the pot luck: I'm going to bring a big old thing of Mac and Cheese and Hillary is hinting at some cookies for all!

    December 16, 2013

  • Robert R.

I still need a ride...to be picked up at Ontario airport or I'll get a car and park in Yucca Valley. My flight arrives at 5:30PM Thursday night.
I will bring a lead rack, rope and drwas as well.

    December 13, 2013

    • Mihai

Robert, I can pick you up. However, you may need to spend a little bit more time sightseeing the great metropolis of Ontario until I get there. I'll aim to leave around 6pm from my place, but traffic out of LA is terrible no matter the day of the week, so it might be a good 2 hours until I get to Ontario. If waiting is not a problem, I'll get you.

      December 13, 2013

  • Mihai

Hi all, I will bring my 2-person tent (to share with another person), my 60m rope and a couple of bundles of firewood. Leaving from San Fernando Valley Thursday evening - have Joe as one passenger and can fit two more. I can scoop up Lindella on the way.

    December 12, 2013

    • Mihai

So, anyone still need a ride? I have room for 2 more.

      December 13, 2013

  • Lindella

So happy to be joining you all! Since we have a limit on cars allowed at the campground, would someone be willing to swing by and pick me up at the Yucca Valley WalMart anytime on Thursday? (I'm pretty sure they allow overnight parking....)

    1 · December 11, 2013

    • Mihai

If you need to leave later, I can pick you up sometime on Thursday evening in/near Palm Springs (don't mind the detour).

      December 12, 2013

    • Lindella

That sounds great Hiroko! I'll text you the details. :) And thanks for the offer Mihai but I'm 30-40 min E of Palm Springs....

      December 12, 2013

  • Robert R.

Would it be convenient for anyone to grab me from the Ontario airport Thursday. I could book a flight to arrive at Noon, 3;30 or 5:30.

    December 12, 2013

  • Kelvin N.

    I will bring a 4-person tent....also 2 burners gas stove

    December 11, 2013

    • Darren S.

      OK thats marvelous, thank you.

      December 11, 2013

    • Kelvin N.

Also will bring a full trad rack and 2 ropes.

      December 11, 2013

  • Dagmar

I'll be arriving Friday 12/27 night. I have to work on 12/26 and 12/27

    December 10, 2013

  • Hiroko Y

I will take two burner gas stove, two bundle fire woods and starter.

    December 10, 2013

    • Darren S.

Thank you Hiroko! That will be a help.

      December 10, 2013

    December 4, 2013

    • Izabela

Kelvin, I just sent you a message.

      December 4, 2013

    • Mihai

Kelvin, I'm also thinking of leaving Thursday, getting there late at night. I'm in North Hollywood, so meeting up should be made easy. Can fit 4 + gear in my car.

      December 5, 2013

  • Kelvin N.

Ahh, there are lots of familiar names on this list. Can't wait to catch up with y'all
