Dear Meetup folks and SMG Members,
Sierra Mountaineering Group just entered our fourth year. We've come a long way from the small group of climbers that gathered on Meetup in 2009 to become one of the most active not-for-profit mountaineering clubs today. As a result of this evolution, we've changed our name to SMC - Sierra Mountaineering Club.
And we're not done growing or improving yet, and that's why I'm writing. I'm excited to announce an AVALANCHE of exciting improvements and enhancements to the club that are on the way. Hold on to your helmets.
First, after lengthy development, we now provide 9 training courses in the disciplines of Rock Climbing, Snow, Ice and Glacier Climbing, and Mountaineering for a very reasonable cost. SMC training courses now have a more comprehensive span than ever before, and go much deeper in content and skillset development. Each discipline has three tiered levels which build upon each other, with each training course running at two days with 16 hours of hands-on instruction in a small group. We hold them on site over a weekend and nearby housing will be available, for those of you coming from out of town.
Completing each training course qualifies you to attend technical club climbs and continue advancing your skills, resulting in documented proficiency of that skill set. Each training course you complete will help you become a safer, smarter and more confident climber. See this overview of our 2014 Training Courses.
Secondly, two Rock Climbing (RCK 1) training courses will be offered back-to-back in October, and they are NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATION on www.sierramountaineeringgroup.org.
In November, we'll unveil Mountaineering Level 1 training course (MTN 1), and then in December, we offer Snow, Ice and Glacier Climbing Level 1 (SIG 1). In 2014 we'll continue to roll out training courses so that by summer members will be able to complete training in each discipline all the way up to Level 3, just in time for expeditions.
Members who complete training courses will be considered first for official club events, such as Rock Climbing Smith Rocks in November and Joshua Tree in December. Completed training courses and "proficiencies" will be kept on record with the club so we can continue to assist you in your development as a climber.
No other group is going to be able to offer you long term mentoring and skills development like this!
Next, we've reduced our annual membership from $200 to only $80 per year. Monthly membership is still available at $30/month. With SMC membership you can register for training courses and all club climbs and expeditions, find climbing partners, and access all the other member resources we've got for you on our website. You can join right now.
And the SMC official website? That's changed too.
SMC's website is still at www.sierramountaineeringgroup.org and will be THE ONLY place to go to register for all official club events. Meetup will continue to be a "bulletin board" for us to post announcements, pictures and another place to post our official events calendar. Member-organized private events will also be there - because SMC @Meetup will now open up to everyone to post their personal climbing plans in view of about 700 other climbers. What a great way to find partners!
We also hang out on Facebook so join us there as well. In the near future, our address will change to www.sierramountaineeringclub.org, and we'll let you know when that occurs, for sure!
All new and renewing members will receive the SMC training logbook, a membership card, (and most importantly) the new SMC sticker in November. :-)
We're having our Annual Dinner in November as well, where we'll show videos and a slideshow from our most significant climbs of the last year.
Also, we'll be offering the Avalanche Level 1 certification, Wilderness First Aid certification and our own Mountaineering First Aid courses next year.
Non-technical club climbs will still be available first-come first serve to all current members. All current club members will still be able to RSVP for club climbs where you can certify your skills.
