Starting at Gravelly Point just north of National Airport, both hikes go through Old Town Alexandria on their way south, offering an opportunity for lunch, coffee, or maybe window shopping on the return hike. The shorter option turns around just below the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, while the longer hike goes all the way to George Washington's home at Mount Vernon.
Meeting place: Meet 8am at the north end of Gravelly Point Park parking lot on the George Washington Parkway, just north of National Airport. Driving directions can be obtained from http://tinyurl.com/bhs9uhb. Be aware that the Gravelly Point parking lot can be reached only from the northbound lanes of the GW Memorial Parkway.
