Frank Wodarczyk -[masked], [masked]

Level:  18- or 30-mi.  Strenuous (E/H)

This 18- or 30-mi. out-and-back hike follows the Mount Vernon Bike Trail along the Potomac and features tremendous views of the Potomac River as well as of monuments in Washington and a marsh and wildlife preserve below Alexandria. Starting at Gravelly Point just north of National Airport, both hikes go through Old Town Alexandria on their way south, offering an opportunity for lunch, coffee, or maybe window shopping on the return hike.  The shorter option turns around just below the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, while the longer hike goes all the way to George Washington's home at Mount Vernon.

Meeting place:  Meet 8am at the north end of Gravelly Point Park parking lot on the George Washington Parkway, just north of National Airport.  Driving directions can be obtained from  Be aware that the Gravelly Point parking lot can be reached only from the northbound lanes of the GW Memorial Parkway.

Leaders:  Gary Kosciusko, [masked] or 703/[masked] (before 10pm); and Frank Wodarczyk, [masked], 703/[masked] (before 10 pm), or (cell phone, day of hike only) 703/624-1040.

ODH: Although open to all, this hike is part of a series of training hikes leading up to the One Day Hike (ODH) -- 100 or 50 km along the C&O Canal -- on April 26, 2014.  See the ODH listing for more information:[masked]/.

I give the outing five stars to honor the fortitude of the seven hiking participants who went their intended distances, with special kudos to the four who walked the whole 30 miles under pretty wet conditions!

Frank And I salute the seven hearty souls who showed up and hiked many miles in less than ideal conditions. Now that's commitment!

Had a fun time, but oh my, the wet weather gave me blisters all over, despite changing my socks!

Yes folks, in case you're wondering, we plan to go "rain or shine" (and right now it looks like rain). So dress for the weather. I'm dressing in multiple layers, taking a very lightweight umbrella, a water resistant hat, water resistant boots, a headband and gloves; also taking several spare dry pairs of socks. Am planning to enjoy it despite the forecast!
