Cat Rock, Cunningham Falls State Park, Thurmont MD

MODERATE/STRENUOUS: Join us for an ~ 8.4 mile out-and-back hike to Cat Rock overlook in Cunningham Falls State Park, Thurmont, MD, via the Catoctin/Cat Rock/Bob's Hill Trail and the Catoctin-Cat Rock Connector Trail.  We'll start out at ~600' elevation from the Manor Area of Cunningham Falls State Park (about 3 miles south of Thurmont, off Rt. 15, and directly across from the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo. The first 1.5 miles is all elevation gain until we reach Bob's Hill Overlook (1765' elevation).  From there, it's another 2.7 miles of relatively flat, easy hiking along the ridge line until we get to Cat Rock (elevation 1560').  Cat Rock provides a spectacular 180 degree view of eastern Frederick County.  Due to the distance (8.4 miles) and elevation gain/decent of over 2700', this hike is rated on the harder side of moderate.

Optional Dining: For those interested, we'll stop for an optional dinner/beer at the Shamrock Restaurant in Thurmont afterwards.

I will be co-leading the hike, and I'll organize a carpool from the Columbia / Ellicott City area if anybody lets me know that they are interested.
