Pandas/Data Analysis

Abstract:

pandas is used by many people to make their lives easier when analyzing data. This talk is centered around how the overarching goal of user productivity has driven the balance of API development and performance optimization. We will cover some pandas basics. We'll talk about pandas performance. And we'll discuss data structures and algorithms. Along the way, we'll cover best practices and tools useful for developing open source projects."

Speakers:

Chang She is the CTO/co-founder of DataPad. A pythonista and recovering financial quant, Chang was a core contributor to pandas prior to co-founding DataPad. Chang is passionate about creating better data tools to make knowledge workers more productive.

Andy Hayden is a core contributor to pandas and holds the dubious accolade of having answered the most pandas-related questions on Stack Overflow. Andy is an analyst and software engineer from the UK, turned Data Scientist in CA, and is enthusiastic about making data tools easy.

And, here is the recording of the meeting. You will need to review the iPython notebooks while listening to video in the section where they switch laptops: https://www.youtube.co...

My wife and I are just getting into Python. She is a B.I. analyst and data manager at a national company and uses tools such as Tableau, Information Builders, and of course Excel. After this nice presentation we couldn't see the value of Pandas for her. Data Frames looks interesting but she already has tools to do that; if we understood enough of the presentation.

My first meetup! Thought the presenters did a great job. They were super knowledgeable and fielded questions well.

This was a very helpful explanation of the problem Panda was originally created to solve, and what it is now. An insider's perspective on this very popular library, well prepared and very well presented.

Will recording of this event be available?

    August 28, 2014

    • Glen J.

If the speaker allows it abd doesn't mind doing a recorded stream on their laptop. Never guaranteed though.. So you should attend ;)

      August 28, 2014

    • Glen J.

We have a stream. But, some screen sharing was missing (confusion with switching laptops). All audio is recording though (and some screen sharing video)

      August 28, 2014

  • Shivani R.

Can the speakers post slides, so that folks can decide if they want to attend based on the level of detail?

    August 28, 2014

    • Glen J.

That's a good question. We normally post slides after the talk. But, some speakers may not mind releasing the slides early. We're obviously too late for this one.

We have slides. But, a good deal of this was also a walk through of an iPython Notebook.
