RailsBridge Workshop for Women at Outright (Students)

Let's meet at Outright's office in Sunnyvale for a day of Rails learning. More details about the topics to be covered are forthcoming, but here's the schedule:

Friday, May 31, 2013

6pm-9pm: Software Installfest (REQUIRED)

Please plan on being there for 30-90 minutes to get all software installed or updated. You may already have done this before, but we need to make sure you have the latest versions of the software we'll use.

Saturday, June 1, 2013

9:00am-4:30pm: Workshop

5pm: After-party for volunteers & attendees

It's necessary to do ALL of the following to complete registration:

1) Confirm that the email address you have listed in Meetup is actually one that you check on a regular basis. (We'll be sending updates, notifications, and to-dos prior to the event, and you'll lose your spot if you fail to respond in a timely manner.)

2) If you have a Mac, download and install Xcode on your laptop before coming to Installfest on Friday, May 31. (Xcode is the software that creates a coding environment for you to tinker with during the workshop.) The Xcode installer is a very large file that may take 2-3 hours to download. Doing it at work on Friday is totally legit; waiting until Friday night at the installfest is not. The installfest instructions for getting Xcode are here: http://installfest.railsbridge.org/installfest/install_xcode.

3) Fill out the registration form that we email to you (coming soon). It will provide us with details about your operating system, the type and level of programming experience you have, and whether you will need childcare. You must fill out the registration form before 5pm on Monday, May[masked], so we can compile the final list of attendees and allow those on the waitlist to take open spots. If you need childcare, please make sure to get the registration form to us as soon as possible so we can work with you to arrange a safe environment for your kids!

    Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the "Better late than never" edition of the RailsBridge retrospective. I wanted to thank everyone for coming and learning new things while having fun!

I told you that I would write everything down and I wasn't kidding, although just after the RailsBridge workshop I moved across the country and got a little distracted in the meantime. So please accept my humble apologies that this is late but if you would kindly fill out this form https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGs0MkJTX29SYTg4dzBzMGZLRFpfR1E6MA your feedback is supremely important and using this form, will be taken anonymously. Without further ado, follow this link https://gist.github.com/nuclearsandwich/1429661 to the answer to every "what's next?" question you could have. Thanks again from Richa and myself and we'll see you soon!

    Cheers,
    Steven!

Thank you all for making this rampup on ROR so wonderful and informative. Learnt a lot in a short period of time. Even though I have to fill in the blanks (personally), all the teachers, organizers and volunteers were absolutely awesome. Hopefully can pass it forward in the near future. Sorry for the late reply. Took yesterday off from my computer.

Thank you everyone for making the workshop such a wonderful and enlightening experience! Big kudos to Steven and Richa for all their hard work in event planning. All the volunteers were amazing and definitely inspired me to keep my head up and continue my studies in computer science. Thanks again and I hope we can all keep in touch!

If you haven't yet gone to http://bridgetroll.herokuapp.com and registered for the event, please do so. We *need* you to do this in order to place you in classes and find out what people can eat so we can order appropriate food for the weekend. If you aren't registered on Bridge Troll, your spot is not guaranteed and you make my life and Richa's a lot harder.

If you have issues with Bridge Troll feel free to let me know via email.

She's installed ( Xcode ). Hunting through some beginner's stuff to see what works and what doesn't.

    May 30, 2013

  • joschka-joseph a.

    Ooops!
    Corrections:

    1. Installed Xcode, earlier I said X11. Did that last week.
    2. I don't see the Unix option ( ...or any option box ) it just installs Xcode. There must be an install log somewhere or something Unix-y I can type to see if it fails or not. Keep in mind, I'm running 10.8.3. , so Maybe that option won't present itself. Help?

    May 30, 2013

  • joschka-joseph a.

    OK...
    1, Finally afforded a laptop ( Hey! I'm out of work 2+ years !)
    2, Downloaded X11 on Mac
3, I'm waiting for the registration form.
4, Do I bring my own coffee, pillow and sandwich?

    May 30, 2013

    • Richa A.

Great to hear you'll be able to make it. Answers/comments to your points: 2. You need XCode, not X11, please. 3. The registration form is at http://bridgetroll.he.... 4. No, no need. We'll have dinner at the install fest, and more breakfast, lunch, snacks and beverages than you can shake a stick at on Saturday.

    Hi all,

Some more news on parking. It turns out, unfortunately, that the owners of the building we're in do not allow access to the non-public areas of the garage without badges on the weekend.

The city of Sunnyvale website has thoughtfully provided a parking guide (http://sunnyvaledowntown.com/uploads/2/7/4/5/2745336/map_april2010.pdf), and it looks like the best we can do is the 4-hour parking near the Target/Macy's, but it would necessitate people moving their cars at lunch. Apologies for the inconvenience; we'll see if we can find a way around this for the next RB at Outright.

Also, we were just informed that the building is performing emergency maintenance on the water system in the building on Saturday, so we have arranged to use the bathrooms in the neighboring building, 150 Mathilda Place. We'll have people available on workshop day to direct visitors. Again, sorry for the inconvenience, but consider yourself warned. Please contact me with questions.

    Thanks,
    Richa

    Does anyone know about parking?

    May 30, 2013

    • Richa A.

Yes, it's 100 Mathlida Place, Suite 100. Also, with regard to parking: there is public parking under the building that is limited to 3 hours (enforced by the city), and aboveground parking nearby that is limited to 2 hours. They do enforce, so it's probably safest to move cars. There is a gated/ticketed part of the parking structure, but we're working on checking if that area will be open on the weekend, and getting validation slips for it if so. Long story short, there is a bit of inconvenience with the public parking within about a block radius of the building. I'll write with more details ASAP.

A family emergency makes it necessary to cancel my attendance this weekend. Thanks for organizing and I hope to attend the next time this workshop happens

Just wanted to point out the address for Outright is actually 100 Matilda Place, Sunnyvale NOT 100 Matilda Ave.

    May 29, 2013

    • Constance

Thank you! Google Maps was showing the address in the middle of an overpass and I was beginning to wonder :)

The issues with Bridge Troll should now all be resolved. If you have a problem please let me know by emailing [masked]

It would be delightful if all RSVPs were in by noon on Thursday! Thanks.

  • Steven! R.

Hi everyone! It's finally time for us to get more information from you so we can teach you great stuff this weekend. If you could please go to http://bridgetroll.herokuapp.com/events/39 and sign up as a student, that would be fantastic.

Your RSVP is *tentative only* until we have your information in Bridge Troll as there are important questions we need answered.

If you have any issues or concerns with the Bridge Troll sign up process please either post a comment or email [masked]. Thanks and see you Friday!

    May 29, 2013

    • Maida

      Yep, getting the same issue.

      May 29, 2013

    • Steven! R.

Hey Everyone, thanks for letting us know about the Bridge Troll issues. The maintainers have been notified and we'll figure out what's going on and let you know when it's resolved.

Is there a registration fee for this event?

    May 24, 2013

    • Steven! R.

None at all! RailsBridge events generally free.

      May 24, 2013

    • Richa A.

Zara, I see you RSVPed twice, once by yourself and once with a guest. Could you remove the RSVP for the one that's not right, please?

      May 24, 2013

  • Steven! R.

My apologies for the delays in instructions everyone! I was in the middle of final exams and the app we're using to track the event, Bridge Troll, is still under very active development (mostly by RailsBridge alumni!) for the moment there's nothing you need to do. Over the weekend or early next week we'll send out a survey either using http://bridgetroll.herokuapp.com or Google Docs. Thanks for your patience everyone!

    • Juan

Done. I thought I had done it already. Thanks for the heads up.

      May 16, 2013

  • Steven! R.

We'll be using Bridge Troll, a RailsBridge project, to help Richa and I organize this workshop. If you've never used it before, don't worry. Instructions will head your way this evening!
