STUDENTS: RailsBridge Workshop for Women at Outright/GoDaddy

Let's meet at the Outright/GoDaddy office in Sunnyvale for a day of Rails learning. We'll cover the beginning Rails curriculum as usual, as well as the intermediate level if there is interest. Here's the schedule:

Friday, November 1, 2013

6pm – 9pm: Software Installfest (REQUIRED)

Please plan on being there for 30-90 minutes to get all software installed or updated. You may already have done this before, but we need to make sure you have the latest versions of the software we'll use.

Saturday, November 2, 2013

9:00am – 4:30pm: Workshop

5pm: After-party for volunteers & attendees

It's necessary to do ALL of the following to complete registration:

Confirm that the email address you have listed in Meetup is actually one that you check on a regular basis. (We'll be sending updates, notifications, and to-dos prior to the event, and you'll lose your spot if you fail to respond in a timely manner.)

Register at Bridge Troll. It will provide us with details about your operating system, the type and level of programming experience you have, and whether you will need childcare. You must register before 5pm on Monday, October[masked], so we can compile the final list of attendees and allow those on the waitlist to take open spots. If you need childcare, please make sure to get the registration form to us as soon as possible so we can work with you to arrange a safe environment for your kids!

Yukihiro Matsumoto, "Matz", was actually here in Silicon Valley just last week giving a talk on the new language he's now working on, mRuby. :)

A million thanks to Richa for organizing this, and thanks to all the volunteers and instructors as well for making this come about. Bernie is a great teacher! He explained the concepts, the framework well and helps me understand better how everything ties together. Thank you so much, Bernie!
Thanks Outright/GoDaddy for sponsoring the event and providing such good food!

Don't know if i missed this somehow, but if there's a survey to rate the event/instructors, I would be glad to fill it out.

Exceptional! This was one of the best railsbridge events I have attended. I learned a great deal both quality and quantity-wise. My instructor Conrad, was super knowledgeable, articulate and patient, and got us engaged and actively participating throughout the session. I also think the low student-teacher ratio was very beneficial. I only wish we had more time!

Extremely knowledgeable and supportive teachers, low students to teachers ratio, divided by level groups and extremely delicious food made this workshop quite outstanding. I learn a lot and had a great time! Thank you!

Something has popped up so I will not be able to make it for Saturday. I couldn't change the RSVP (it says event has already occurred), but someone may take my spot as I can no longer attend.

if the course is full and waitlist, then can I join in as a volunteer?

    October 30, 2013

    • Richa A.

Desiree, we likely have enough volunteers to handle the two of you on the waitlist, so you will probably get in—I just need to go through my finalized class roster tonight. Meetup will send you an email once you've been moved over.

Is this for women? Why there are some gentlemen out there?

    October 4, 2013

    • Richa A.

Primarily for women, yes, as the goal of RailsBridge is to increase the diversity of the programming community. Gentlemen are welcome, of course, but we do generally like them to be guests of women attendees. It'd only be a cause for concern if we had far more men than women attendees.

    Intermediate please.
What version of Rails will we be using?

    September 12, 2013

    • Richa A.

We'll need to discuss this with the teachers to see what they'll be comfortable instructing on, but there shouldn't be too much trouble (read: external gems) using 4.0.x for either curriculum.

Could you please specify what you plan to install/update on Nov. 1st, so that I can make a better choice on which laptop to bring and head-start on installation/update process. Thanks a lot for organizing this event!

    September 12, 2013

    • Richa A.

Nina, we'll be installing everything you need to develop and run a rails app on your machine. Please read through http://installfest.ra... to see what all we'll be doing.
