Re: [ruby-99] Moving outsourced RoR dev work In-House. What are the first few steps?

I'd vote for a generalist software developer who has experience in the technology you're looking at and an understanding of your basic business. If you're lucky enough to find someone who can do both of these then entrust them to bring on the rest of the technical team. This person is going to set the pace for development so make sure you find a person who really wants to do something with their career. (A big reason I'm iffy on how recruitment companies work: they focus on the money and not the passion)

Just go for a smart person who "gets software." Also be prepared for a complete code re-write if the first engineer truly believes its worthwhile.

Hire the first engineer to answer that question ...as such make sure (s)he is good at many things.

If I want to put a team together that will bring all of the RoR development that had been outsourced, who do I hire first? RoR Platform Back-end oriented guru? Or more Front-end oriented Rails person? Need your advice on how to build a strong team of 3 or 4 developers starting with "The 1st Engineer".
