I find that YUI is good quality overall, and runs on most browsers without problems.  Gridbuilder is good too.

Todd,
You might try YUI DataTable.  This library accepts a variety of datatypes, and would offer you the ability to sort by column.  Additionally, this AutoComplete Example looks like the filtering functionality you are looking for.

I have a table of data that I'd like to sort by column and filter by value. I've seen some examples on the web, but the most interesting ones are several years old. What have you done in this situation? I like the functionality found in http://dev.nozav.org/rails_ajax_table.html, except he uses classic pagination instead of will_paginate.

I'd like to sort the table, ascending/descending by first name, or just show me the users in the USA who have logged in recently.

Rails Cookbook and Advanced Rails Recipes books and Ryan's railscasts are silent on this topic.
