Bull Hill / Mt Taurus Hike (Cold Spring NY)

Let's take a hike!

Last year, we headed up the Hudson and checked out the arts and museum scene of Beacon NY. This year, let's get off at Cold Spring NY and take a hike!

No, not Breakneck Ridge -- because that would hurt way too much, but its often overlooked sibling Bull Hill / Mt Taurus which supposedly offers the same fresh air, sweeping views, outdoor adventure, etc ... for slightly less effort. We likey.

This will be a laid-back hike. We will focus on being out in nature and enjoying the view over trying to keep a certain pace. However, the hike is still moderately strenuous (straight uphill in the beginning), so you need to be in decent shape and need to know your abilities.

CURRENT PLAN

Meet by 9:15a at Grand Central in the Main Hall in front of escalators to Met Life Building. We will take the 9:50a Metro North Hudson Line train ($26.50 round trip) and arrive Cold Spring before 11:00a. Before leaving the station, we will take a restroom break.

We will take a short walk from the station to the trail head. There are a number of trails offering different vistas and point of interest (see map). We will decide a route together based on our interest and energy level. Both will involve a steep 1400 feet ascent in the beginning and take about 4 hours to complete.

After our hike, we can get cleaned up and grab an early dinner in Cold Spring before getting back on the train. We an decide then if we feel like a quick pizza or sit-down meal. The train departs every hour i.e. 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, etc.

WHAT TO BRING

You should wear hiking-appropriate clothes (usually lightweight, wicking, usually wool/non-cotton) and hiking boots (or sneakers with good treads). Carry a daypack and pack 2 liters of water, snacks/lunch, sunscreen, extra socks, hat, sunglasses, bug spray, sanitizer, tissues/wipes.

Please RVSP here only if you have read the below Liability Waiver and are SERIOUSLY INTERESTED in attending. Let me know if you have done this hike before. It would be great to have a co-host!

Liability Waiver: There will be no professional hikers officially 'leading' this hike. (We would be doing this together as peers.) Hey Lei, Thanks for the amazing iPhone pics! I was way too pooped / lazy to pull out my bulky camera.

Perfect weather, great outdoor work out, decent food at the river side, trains were on time, one cannot wish more.

I am totally beat and going to sleep well tonight! That initial ascent was brutal, but the views were worth the work. What a great day - great weather, great views, great company, and great food (at Hudson House River Inn)!

It was a perfect day for hiking - even though the 17-year cicada was a bit noisy. I can sleep well tonight.

Check your email for my cell and reminders. Cuz despite the ugliness outside right now, Saturday's forecast calls for clear and sunny skies, so our Bull Hill / Mt Taurus Hike is still a GO!

Sadly, it looks like the forecast for Saturday still calls for rain (at least in the morning). Instead of waiting another day for the weather to magically change course and creating last minute "are we- aren't we" confusion, I have decided to go ahead and move the hike to the following Saturday, June 15th. Hopefully, that will give us a better chance for dry ground and clear skies.

Folks, This Saturday is forecasted for rain so we might need to postpone this. How's next Saturday (June 15)? Will check forecast tomorrow night and make a decision.
