Okono is a new style of singing which opens up the joy of song to everybody. Devised by well-loved musician and composer John Bowker, Okono singing makes the experience of singing together available to all.
John Bowker is one of Ireland and the UK's best-known and most well-loved music facilitators. As the creator of Tribal Spirit Drumming he has ignited a passion for hand drumming in thousands of people all over the world. He now brings that unique teaching style to sharing his love of singing -with the same sense of playfulness, joy and deep wisdom that anyone who works with him has come to treasure.
What happens at an Okono class?
The class runs for about 2 hours, with the first part spent learning a new piece of music. Most of the songs are three or four part harmonies and each person can choose which part of the song they feel most comfortable singing. For the rest of the class we sing the song together as a group. We take plenty of time to enjoy this so that the music can work its deep magic on us.
Okono songs come from different traditions around the world, including Central African, Celtic and Native American songs and Rainforest chants. We also sing many original pieces devised by the Okono Singing facilitators.
Each drop-in class costs €10.00
What can singing do for you?
Singing is one of the most nourishing experiences a person can have. Singing in a group is a great way to connect with other people,
make friends and create community.
As the ethos of Okono Singing is of kindness and creativity,
it is a very supportive, fun and human-friendly environment to be in. For many people an Okono class is a highlight of their week.
