NY Single Parents - First Picnic of the Year - New location/Limited spots

  • June 14 · 11:00 AM
  • Central Park North of Sheeps Meadow

In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer. ~ Albert Camus

Well, after countless hints and reminders it's time to schedule the first picnic of the Summer.

For newer members, our picnics are always huge successes!  The kids always have a blast and so do the parents.  (You can go peruse comments of previous events to see how  other Single Parents felt about them.) We usually get  75 plus people bringing all kinds of food  and games.  There is however a limit on RSVP's so please get yours in now (even if you can't make it.) We'll meet at Sheeps Meadow and I'll send out more detailed directions the night before the event. The picnic will start at 11:00AM (if you can get there a little earlier to grab some space for us, that'd be great) and then we'll play games, eat food, etc.

NOW, everyone can't bring potato salad. So please RSVP now and if its yes (there are no maybes) please make a note in the comment box about what you're bringing as well as the age of your child(ren.)  This means that you should check the site to see what's going to be there and then commit to bring what's not.  Besides food, popular items also include pup tents, bubbles, lawn games, etc.

Looking forward to seeing you all. Let's have some fun!

Update- Hi- I've been reading about the parade & it seems to be bigger than I thought. It will be very crowded/mobbed& I don't want to get stuck in an area that it will be hard to get out of. I'll still be going to Luna Park on the boardwalk to the kiddie rides though. I Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Hi all- I figured I'd follow Harry's lead & ask about getting together here(sorry didn't know where else to post this) is anyone interested in going to the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island on Saturday? I thought I'd let Becky go on some rides 1st( I think Luna Park opens at 11) then head to parade after which starts at 1. Feel free to email me if you are interested
    [masked]. Enjoy your weekend everyone!

This Saturday - 3 pm - the new lakeside water park in Prospect Park. Some of us will be there checking it out. My girls have been there a few times and love it. I'll be by the picnic tables with a big red double stroller. I'd post this in a more formal manner if I knew how. If you can make it, it will be great to meet you and enjoy the water.

Hey, I'm wondering if there's a listserve or place for us NYC area single parents to general stuff...like good places to vacation with your young kids when you're a single parent, etc. Common issues. Anyone got suggestions? I bet a lot of us with common issues could really have some useful discussions.

    1 · June 16

    • Vanessa

I would love a list like this!

Sounds great. I am trying to plan the summer with my son and have been coming across some places. A getaway meetup will be fun

My daughter and I had a great time Saturday! My back, on the other hand, was not happy about sitting on the ground. Still hurting. I noticed a few people brought carts and camp chairs. I have a folding camp chair. Does anyone have a suggestion for a small cart that hold it and some other things, and still be manageable on the subway from Queens?

I have the girls every Saturday and we spend most of the day in Prospect Park. They are really getting into playing with other kids now, and I'd love to be able to arrange some playdates. Please feel free to email me if you'd like to get a group together to play in Prospect Park on Saturday/s. Best, Harry - [masked]

I missed meeting you all. The girls (twin three year olds) stopped sleeping/napping with pacifiers in saturday, so it turned out to be a bug day for us and we didn't make it.

Kristi that sounds like a nice idea. Also maybe a place to set up things like clothing swaps or just giving away clothes? I always end up donating Becky's clothes- but would be more than happy to give her clothes(good condition of course) to any of the parents here. She grows like a weed:) I feel one week I buy something then next week it's already too small - especially her shoes. She wears clothing sizes 4-6 sometimes bigger depending on brand of clothes.

Krisit, Rachel - these are good ideas and something that I'm working on. A large non-profit organization here in the City has expressed an interest in doing a joint venture with us. If that pans out, you'll see this and more go up on nysingleparents.org. In the meantime, if you know anyone with design or PR skills who can volunteer a small amount of time let me know!

What an amazing day and event. I'm going to quote my daughter here: "The only bad thing about Ed's events is that we never want to leave, mommy" She is 9yo and she knows how to appreciate a good time.

    June 14

  • Brian

Ok. I think I am all packed for the bus/train ride there with two toddlers. I'm going to bring a frisbee, a ball if I can fit it, and whatever else the twins grab at the very last moment before we leave. I've packed some pb&j for us and some other snacks which I'm willing to share if there is enough. I packed as much as I could into my bags.

    June 13

    • Ed G

Eileen, I sent a link to some pretty thorough directions this Morning. Did you get them? Did anyone else not get them?

      June 13

    • EILEEN

I had not gotten them, but have them now thanks! I will be there closer to 11:30, taking the Metro North from Westchester, the earlier train would be too early! I will be with my son Ryan, 10 years old. We are bringing a variety of hummus and pita chips and a blanket & chair.

      June 13

  • Brian

The kids are excited for this. They are 3 1/2 year old twin boy and girl. I'm not sure what we are bringing but I will be traveling as light as possible as the plan is to take the bus/train from queens.

    June 5
