SPDA Book Club for February: Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me

  • Feb 20, 2012 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

The SPDA book club will be meeting in February to discuss "The Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me", by Chelsea Handler.

Bring a snack/dish to share and the beverage of your choice.

Following is a brief synopsis of the book:

"My tendency to make up stories and lie compulsively for the sake of my own amusement takes up a good portion of my day and provides me with a peace of mind not easily attainable in this economic climate."--Chelsea Handler, from Chapter 10 of Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang It's no lie: Chelsea Handler loves to smoke out "dumbassness," the condition people suffer from that allows them to fall prey to her brand of complete and utter nonsense. Friends, family, co-workers--they've all been tricked by Chelsea into believing stories of total foolishness and into behaving like total fools. Luckily, they've lived to tell the tales and, for the very first time, write about them.

The conversation and food were great. Laura is a wonderful hostess. The book apparently required you to be a long time fan of Chelsea Lately to like.

The value of the book club is to expose me to books that I would not have considered on my own. The discussion was lively and worthwhile.

    Good mix of opinions!

For a book group meeting in which only a third of attendees actually read the whole book, we managed to have a lively discussion, and it was a lot of fun, as usual! Sarah, don't feel too bad about the book selection. I think we liked giving you grief about it as much as anything. I know I did! ;) Rick, I hope our conversation didn't embarrass you too much. And OC, where the hell were you?? :)

  • Laura

I read a different "light" book instead that I will share with the group.

Chris, you are always welcome to come whether you've read the book or not! And I'll let you in on a little secret...I didn't read it, either (sssshhh, don't tell)

OC, you could probably pick up the book and read a chapter or two. That would be enough for this book since it is not novel. Since they are not related you could even pick out the shortest chapters (other than the last one) and be fine.

@ Nancy-take care of yourself! That sounds awful! Hope to see you up and around soon so we can chat again! Hugs to you!

OC, that hasn't been a problem! ;) Good company + pizza + lively discussions = fun!

Can I come even if I haven't read the book? ;)

    Lol, sausage ok?

    Meatetarian :)

Pizza it is! I can pick up a few take-n-bakes from Papa Murphys. What do folks want? One cheese, one veggie and ???

    February 20, 2012

  • Sarah M.

    We can always order pizza?

    February 20, 2012

Well, I was going to make chili last night but ended up helping my son with a school project all evening instead. I will try to come up with some sort of a main dish, but I have no idea what that will be yet. Something on the grill is always quick and easy. Chicken, maybe, or burgers?

Same here, Dana. I thought it was a fictional character. Allie

I didn't know Chelsea Handler was a real person until about 2 weeks ago. Never heard of her before. Or should I not be admitting this???

Cathy, that sounds wonderful. Let's get you out of those blues! I didn't like the book either but I'm willing to come and poke fun at it.

I'll bring a fruit tray with dips (chocolate of course, and another one!) :)

Since it's getting close to the meetup time, I'll bring a dessert. Laura, I have something in mind that needs some freezer space. Will that be possible?

Also, Laura, if need be, we can host it here again. It would be no problem whatsoever. I checked with Mom to see what her schedule would be, but so far it's all clear...Let me know if I can help! :)

I just picked up Lies today. I have to concur with Beth on this one, LOL, but I'm definitely coming. Maybe the first 2 chapters aren't a good indication of the rest of the book...at least, I hope not! Still, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone, no matter what the book is like! :)

I would like to plan on "The Descendents" for April, though. We picked "The Art of Fielding" for March.

We said Lies at the end of the last meeting.

The book is called "Weddings Can Be Murder", by Christie Craig. Check out the link in my previous post for more information.

I think you should come and tell us what you didn't like about it! I am going to give it a go, but I also picked up another book that sounded fun: http://www.christie-craig.com/weddings.html
I haven't read the author before, but the book is positioned as "sexy, suspenseful and seriously funny".

I read part of the book but can't read anymore. I actually find it somewhat emotionally abusive. Please let me know what others think. If I am the only one should I not attend?

For all those who like to purchase, Chelsea's book is on Amazon for less than $16 today

P.S. Looks as though you need to cut and paste the link. Sorry about that.

Check out this Youtube clip of Chelsea Handler interviewing Arianna Huffington. I thought it showed a slightly different aspect of Chelsea Handler. I also love Arianna and her Huffington Post online.

I have the Lies that Chelsea Handler Told Me on hold for me at the library. I'm picking it up today....so it is out there : )

How about: Dress Your Family In Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris. Should be a finny collection of essays and there are multiple available on the library website. The book is from 2004, so it's not in high demand right now.....

I'm open to changing the book, but we did want to do something funny for February. Any ideas on something that would be a good funny read?

    December 27, 2011

  • Cathy P.

I haven't seen the movie yet but the raves just keep on coming. I'd be fine with changing it. :)

    December 27, 2011

  • Laura

May I suggest that we change the book for this month? The title does not appear to be available through the library. I just saw "The Descendants" and would like to read the book. It was an interesting story with a lot of themes that would make for good discussion. Thoughts?
