New Meetup: Taste of New Glarus and CAMPING

From: Kathryn
Sent on: Saturday, June 19, 2010 4:38 PM
Announcing a new Meetup for Single Parents - Divorced Adults Group!

What: Taste of New Glarus and CAMPING

When: Friday, June 25,[masked]:00 PM

Price: $5.00 per person

New Glarus Woods State Park
W5446 County Highway NN
New Glarus, WI 53574

I am posting this in combination with the Outdoor meetup group. The night I am in charge of is Friday, and I thought this would be a fantastic event for families to do, whether it be for one night or all weekend due to the festivities going on in New Glarus. Kids tend to love camping. Another person, Kathy, has the Sat night posted under the Outdoor meetup group. If you also want Saturday, I could possibly add people under me, if you like. I would just want to make sure to get paid back. There are 20 places left under her if it is paid for. Or you could join for the event and unjoin later if you want. On Friday, there is plenty of availability since I just posted it. All three sites are open, so I will decide how many to rent once I get a head count. It would be fabulous to get our families together. There is a local swimming pool nearby that you can go to also. Now, for the info that is being shared between the two groups (I just copied and pasted it). Be sure to read the great events that are occurring:

Kathy has posted the following for the weekend of June 26-27th. However, I would like to add Friday camping for those of us who want to camp the whole weekend and make the most of it. I do not need the $2 meetup fee, just the cost of camping for the one night ($5/person). Otherwise all is the same -- just expanding our time for fun. People could also bring games to share/enjoy. I have ladder golf and a big, soft frisbee. My 7-year-old son will also be with me. It sounds like a good time in New Glarus. I did add directions, which are below. Here is the info already given by Kathy about camping location and the New Glarus festivities:

Has anyone ever told you that you need to 'trust your gut?'

'Cause if you trusted your gut, it would tell you that you've make a fine choice taking a trip to New Glarus the weekend of June 26-27th.

During the 'Taste of New Glarus' you can fill your gut with some of the finest sausage, cheese, fondue, and beer, while listening to some live Swiss folk, yodel and polka music. Toss in some blues and country, too. To be close to the fun, we have booked a group camp site at New Glarus Woods State Park (within walking distance to the fest). Estimated travel time from Madison is 40 minutes, (26.55 miles),

During the 'Taste of New Glarus' downtown streets are lined with food stands and colorful sidewalk sale displays. Taste of New Glarus is your opportunity to sample locally-produced foods and beverages. Downtown merchants will feature special bargains for shoppers. Wineries and breweries (ever try Spotted Cow, Fat Squirrel and Totally Naked? - they?re made by New Glarus Brewing Company) will offer free tours and sampling for $3.50 (you get to keep the glass, too!). Also open are antique stores, meat markets, two museums, an authentic Swiss bakery and a fine array of restaurants, many with authentic Swiss cuisine. There will also be a craft fair downtown from 9:30 - 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Puempel's Olde Tavern

At roughly 6 pm, this group (joined by IL Meetup Groups) will visit Puempel's, housed in one of the oldest buildings in New Glarus. Puempel's is a staple and a gem; the walls are lined with murals of Glarus, Switzerland, the ceiling is dotted with dollar bills. They have a great selection of New Glarus & Swiss beers. A cold Swiss Cheese sandwich on rye and a Spotted Cow will heal all that ails you (or ales you?). On the weekends in summer they have live music. Be careful on how many Spotted Cows you ingest, because if you're not careful the next thing you know you'll be polka-ing (or worse) with a guy named Hans. It's great place to mix with the locals, and catch the true New Glarus spirit. This bar has an outdoor patio, allowing pet owners to enjoy the ambiance too.

We'll also visit Tofflers Bar and Grill, two blocks west of Puempel's, which also has live music that weekend. Located in the "Four Corners" building in the historic Backtown area of New Glarus, there has been a tavern at this location since 1880.

Meetup Fee

The Meetup fee is $2, with an extra $5 per person if you decide to camp with us Saturday night at a nearby state park (details below). Members may arrange their own carpools through this site, by stating a start point with their RSVP. Group meet information and details on parking will be available closer to date of event.

Please note: those who pre-pay ($2 Meetup Fee and if camping, $5/person = $7 per person) will be ensured a spot at the campground; this park often gets completely booked in summer.

New Glarus Woods State Park

New Glarus Woods State Park is within walking distance to New Glarus, just under two miles away. We are getting a group camp rate. These are rustic campsites, non-electric, no flush toilets. There are wells to pump water. Group campsites have picnic tables and fire rings. Up to 8 RV's or campers can stay on our site, the rest will have to tent it. *If you are bringing an RV or camper please indicate that with your RSVP. There are places to shower near the park that charge a nominal fee. Check-in time is 12 noon Saturday; check-out is 3 pm Sunday.

State Park Sticker: Since this is a state park, you will at the very least need a day pass. Passes are $7 for Wisconsin residents. Carpooling will obviously reduce your costs here. (The 2010 annual sticker fee is $25). The pass can be purchased at the campground.

Bring your bike, or rent one in New Glarus from the Chamber of Commerce. Besides camping, New Glarus Woods - all 431 acres of it - offers biking, hiking and picnicking. The park gives direct access to 'The Sugar River State Trail,' a 23-mile, 265-acre, State Trail surfaced with compressed limestone screenings, for bicycling and hiking. Bike rental is $4/half day. Those over age 16 will need a trail pass, which costs $4. The pass can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce.

How to Get There
From the Village of New Glarus, take State Highway 69 south about a mile to County Highway NN. Turn west on NN and go about 1/10 mile to the park entrance.

Your pet is welcome at the park, with a few restrictions. All pets must be under control at all times, and on a leash less than 8 feet long. Pets are not allowed in picnic areas or buildings and cannot be left unattended. You are expected to clean up after your pet. FYI -- If your pet's behavior or noise interferes with other's enjoyment of the park, you may be ticketed and evicted from the park, so make sure Fido - or Fluffy - behaves.

People of legal drinking age may bring alcoholic beverages along for their picnic or campsite meals at this site.

HEIDI FESTIVAL - Got a braided hat with tassels?

Running concurrently this weekend is, you guessed it?The Heidi Festival! The Heidi Festival weekend is filled with great food, entertainment, music, and fun.

The fest highlight is the presentation of Johanna Spyri's classic play, Heidi? the heartwarming story of the young girl with braids, her gruff grandfather, and their love of the Majestic Alps of Switzerland.

Four performances are staged by local actors in a warm presentation that includes live goats and kittens on stage! (Of course, this play is a totally optional activity, and your propensity to purchase Heidi play tickets will likely be directly linked to your amount of alcohol consumption.)

Ticket Info: Heidi Play: Age 12 and over $8.00; 11 and under $6.00. Members would be responsible for getting their own play ticket by calling 800.527.6838. Play runs Saturday, June 26 at 10:00 am and Sunday, June 27 at 1:30 pm at the New Glarus High School. (*You'll want to check out of the campground Sunday before seeing the play).

Widerluege (good bye)! Join us!
