According to Parks Victoria there are many areas of the Dandenongs that are curently closed due to the crazy weather that we've been having. I'll put my thinking cap on and figure out something else that we can do instead that gets us outside and active.
From the Parks Victoria website:
Change of conditions: The following areas of Dandenong Ranges National Park are closed for public safety due to severe weather conditions: One Tree Hill Picnic Ground, Doongalla Picnic Ground, Valley Picnic Ground, Eagles Nest Picnic Ground, Grants Picnic Ground (south end), Kalorama Park, Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground, Sherbrooke Picnic Ground and O’Donohues Picnic Ground. These areas will re-open when conditions ease. at Dandenong Ranges National Park

Lets get active with the kids and head up to the 1000 Steps in the Dandenongs. ....again. This MeetUp has been done recently and everyone had a great day out. Suggestion is to pack some water and a snack to carry whilst doing the steps and then have a picnic/BBQ lunch in the picnic grounds at the bottom. (ie Leave lunch in the car whilst going up the steps.) There is a brilliant play area for the kids to keep them entertained whilst the adults can chat, recover and maybe decide to have a second walk up the steps. :)
I've attached a link to a video that gives you a bit of an idea of the walk/hike: Meet at the bottom of the trail (near the big archway sign that you can see in the video).
Heads up on the parking: It gets busy and parking can be scarce! Get there a few minutes before 1100 to allow tie to get a park. If there is no parking in the carpark, you can park on the road opposite, but be very careful that you are in a parking area and be even more careful crossing the road with the kids.
I'll send an email with my mobile number closer to the day to everyone that RSVPs.
