This is my favorite hike and I can't see the calendar without a GN hike scheduled. It has the most excellent views, varied terrain, no strenuous stuff (besides ups and downs and distance and the last part that is hard because you may be tired), did I say excellent views???? The rocks are just SOOOOOO cool, I can't get enough.
Lake Minnewaska is a wonderful place to share with friends, and Gertrude's Nose is an AMAZING hike. This will be on carriage roads and on nice hiking trails, 7 1/2 miles, TONS of views and great places. It's roughly 20% on carriage roads, 80% on hiking trails. If it's hot you may want to do the final part on carriage trails and avoid the Trail of Tears, but you'll also miss the cool stream that we will rest at before the Miserable Up.
Summer tip: Get yourself a Frogg Toggs cooling towel or bring a wet face cloth in a ziplock bag. Bring a change of shoes/shirt for afterwards.
This is an intermediate hike with a difficulty level of moderate to strenuous. I think I was so distracted by the views and the way cool natural stuff that it didn't seem difficult to me (except if it's hot, which is a good possibility......). There are no horrible ups or downs but rock scrambling and narrow ledges/rock crevices could be an issue if you are not comfortable with these or are scared of heights. The last part of it is the worst, but you'll get past it and there is a lake at the end to soak your tired tootsies in, and we will have a good rest before the last mile......There are a lot of ups and downs, don't be misled, you really need to be in good shape for this hike. It is only for beginners who are in very good shape.
Dress in layers, bring water, hat, suntan lotion, bug stuff, sunglasses, first aid, LUNCH, tissues, and don't forget your camera. Hiking boots mandatory. Dress in layers. Part of the trail is seasonally wet, it's really like a stream when the water is running. If you have interesting health issues please let me know in advance.
Being properly prepared means being hydrated before and during the hike, drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of the hike. You MUST bring lots of water, this is a long hike especially if it's a hot day.
Dogs are welcome if well behaved and under control if off leash. They must be leashed at Minnewaska (park rules). We will likely dine afterwards in New Paltz. Caution if you bring a dog, hot cars kill.
CARPOOL INFO: There is a $8 per car fee for parking. We can carpool from New Paltz or Newburgh, or meet at the upper parking lot of Minnewaska. For friends who are close to Minnewaska we can also collect you from the large lot opposite the Mountain Brauhaus restaurant at the intersection of 299 and 44/55 before you start up the mountain. Carpool would start at 8:40 in Newburgh in the Bed, Bath and Beyond parking lot at the Newburgh Mall. or 9:15 at Mt. Brauhaus, or 9:30 at Minnewaska. Put 'carpool' in your RSVP and the location. Please don't be late, early is good!
Meet at the upper top parking lot. Go straight and UP when you go in the gate.....the parking lots get crowded early, especially if it's a gorgeous day. If you're with the carpoolers you won't get separated or lost if the upper lot is full. You may not get to find us if you aren't with us or can't call me if you can't park with us.
Carpoolers please split the parking fee and contribute to the gas.
After the hike please DO NOT TOUCH THE GOOD TO SEE YOU BUTTONS!!! Check your computer before you leave if you have doubts about the weather. ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK and you will need to sign a liability waiver to participate. Please send me your cell, I will return with mine. Please, no texts. Cell service is questionable up at Minnewaska, another good reason to carpool, you won't be lost and phone service-less!! :-) $2 Meetup fee except if you are a new friend, your first event is free. :-) Happy day!!
