Perseid Meteor Shower....Save the date!!!

  • August 10, 2013 · 9:00 PM

This was a great suggestion for either a do-it-yourself event or a group event if the skies cooperate..... If you can't join us you should try to see them on your own, maybe in your own backyard if you don't have city lights. The meteor shower is visible from early August thru mid August, so try to catch them on your own and we'd love to see your comments. :-)

For good info on the Perseids, check out http://planetsave.com/2013/07/31/perseids-meteor-shower-peaks-august-12-2013/

Find a good place without nearby lights and look up.....I will try to find a good place where we can meet and hang and watch. It also matters what time you look, early morning hours are best, this will obviously be an on-your-own thing for early mornings!!

Update!! Meet at Hiker's Parking lot:
From Rt. 32 south of Vails Gate (5 Corners), turn opposite Angola Rd. onto Pleasant Hill Rd at Black Rock Gun Club sign. Make first left over Moodna Creek onto Taylor Rd., then hiking parking is just ahead on the right past Creekside Lane. If you MapQuest it it is on Taylor Rd and Shaw Rd. or Taylor and Creekside Lane.

We will meet in the parking lot and walk in to the field/hill across the road. We can also follow Shaw Rd. in a bit, we will see what works better. If you are late you will be in the dark, please be on time.

If you are watching on your own please put that in your comment, if you are joining us put SERIOUS in your comment so I know I'm not sitting out in a field alone in the dark. :-) Bring a flashlight, a lawn chair, dress warmly......

This meetup was very different but also very enjoyable. It was a beautiful night to sit out in the middle of a field and search the skies for meteors. We did get to see a few "shooting stars", lots of planes and some satellites. There was this one very strange dancing satellite, I think it was one of those SPY satellites or maybe I just sat out in that field too darn long, but it was fun. If we do this again in December I'm in and this time I will bring my sleeping bag.

Sorry I missed watching with all of you, had family obligation, but I saw meteors also by river at 12am and it was a beautiful sky, meditative says it all, you are a great group

It was interesting event, and a beautiful night. Saw a few meteors and the views are the reason that we do these meet ups. Thanks for be a crazy group of people that will sit in a field looking up at the stars.

This had to be one of the coolest events I've done. We had 9 people camped out staring up at the sky, surrounded by the wonderful sounds of nighttime....the clouds were beautiful too. We did see some meteors, lots of planes and some satellites too. It was very peaceful, meditative, and definitely worth doing again. The December one could be cold, but sounds neat too. Thanks friends for being part of a really neat experience. :-)

I cannot make it - have dinner plans, but thanks for the heads up (so to speak) I will be looking outside in my field

Yeah!! I won't be alone...good thinking with the long pants, and I'm guessing it may be a soggy path so maybe we'll stick to the road to get where we're going. :-) I may bring an ark to get us around.... :-)

If we find other cars there and need additional parking we can use the lot at the Post Office or the Black Rock lot on 32. The grass is probably high at this point so long pants would probably be a good idea. See you there, seriously.

If you need a physical address, Black Rock Rod and Gun Club is 5 Pleasant Hill Road, Mountainville, NY 10953 (not Mountaindale, oops). We are not meeting there, it's for GPS purposes only, then follow my directions above. Please put SERIOUS or HOME in your RSVP. Thanks!!

Wahoo!! I have a location picked out!!! The parking lot for Schunemunk it is.....bring a lawn chair, a flashlight, and possibly a light jacket just in case. We will hike in to the top of the hill, a very short way. A reclining chair will not give you a stiff neck..... :-) I'll post directions in the morning.....it's near Black Rock Rod and Gun Club in Mountaindale..... :-)

So....for a location for the meteor shower I have thought of the big parking lot we use when we do Breakneck (9D south of Beacon), Anthony Wayne Rec Area was suggested (haven't called for rules/availability yet), and I thought of the parking lot for the bowling alley on Rt. 52 west of Walden...I need to know who is interested in traveling, how far, and guessing 9-10pm. If you are serious please let me know your thoughts, otherwise I hope you will catch the meteor show on your own. :-) I know I'll be tired after our hike, and closer to home is always good for me, I am usually a pumpkin after 9pm. :-)

I don't mind driving an hour or so - so Newburgh area is doable, as is the Beacon area...whatever works is fine with me!

How about the park at Plum Point? We know how to get there and there won't be other building lights around to interfere. We wouldn't need to use the building inside, where we've eaten before, just gather around the building and then walk to a better viewing spot.

That silly dawn to dusk rule....plus I know they close the gate at night.....it's no fun calling the police to let you out. ;-)
