Early Fall Gertrude's Nose POTLUCK PICNIC Hike!!!

New Update!! We will do the potluck part AFTER the hike so we can leave our yummies in our cars and not carry them on our hike. NO MAYO please!! Bring a light lunch to enjoy at the Nose, the main feast will be at the picnic area by the parking lot. Please bring your own plate/utensils, it is a carry in/carry out park.

Update!! I'm turning this into a potluck picnic hike. We will not dine after the hike, so bring your yummies and we will share!!! We will dine at the Nose so please bring something easily portable, this is mid-hike. I will also not be carpooling, but can organize anyone who wishes to carpool or caravan.

This is my favorite hike and I can't see the calendar without a GN hike scheduled. It has the most excellent views, varied terrain, no strenuous stuff (besides ups and downs and distance and the last part that is hard because you may be tired), did I say excellent views???? The rocks are just SOOOOOO cool, I can't get enough. Experienced hikers welcome, please no beginners.

Lake Minnewaska is a wonderful place to share with friends, and Gertrude's Nose is an AMAZING hike. This will be on carriage roads and on nice hiking trails, 7 1/2 miles, TONS of views and great places. It's roughly 20% on carriage roads, 80% on hiking trails. If it's hot you may want to do the final part on carriage trails and avoid the Trail of Tears, but you'll also miss the cool stream that we will rest at before the Miserable Up. Please let me know at Millbrook Mountain if you want to do the carriage trail return trip.

This is an intermediate hike with a difficulty level of strenuous. I think I was so distracted by the views and the way cool natural stuff that it didn't seem difficult to me, keep in mind I hike every week. There are no horrible ups or downs but rock scrambling and narrow ledges/rock crevices could be an issue if you are not comfortable with these or are scared of heights. The last part of it is the worst, but you'll get past it and there is a lake at the end to soak your tired tootsies in, and we will have a good rest before the last mile......There are a lot of ups and downs, don't be misled, you really need to be in good shape for this hike.

This is not a hike for beginners. You must have hiked with me within 6 months or be known by a local hiking group to join us. I will ask new people to not join us if I don't think you can do this. We will hike at a steady pace, if you are a slow hiker please choose an alternate activity for your day. It is not fair to the rest of the group to wait for long periods for you, sorry. Please trust me if I encourage you to choose a different hike if you are a beginner.

Dress in layers, bring water, hat, suntan lotion, bug stuff, sunglasses, first aid, POTLUCK LUNCH, tissues, and don't forget your camera. Hiking boots mandatory. Dress in layers. Part of the trail is seasonally wet, it's really like a stream when the water is running. If you have interesting health issues please let me know in advance.

Being properly prepared means being hydrated before and during the hike, drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of the hike.

Dogs are welcome if well behaved and under control if off leash. They must be leashed at Minnewaska (park rules).

CARPOOL INFO: There is a $8 per car fee for parking. We can carpool from New Paltz or Newburgh, or meet at the upper parking lot of Minnewaska. For friends who are close to Minnewaska we can also collect you from the large lot opposite the Mountain Brauhaus restaurant at the intersection of 299 and 44/55 before you start up the mountain. Carpool would begin (leave at) at 8:40 in Newburgh in the Bed, Bath and Beyond parking lot at the Newburgh Mall. or 9:15 at Mt. Brauhaus, or 9:30 at Minnewaska. Put 'carpool' in your RSVP and the location. I am not taking passengers.....Please don't be late, early is good!

Meet at the upper top parking lot. Go straight and UP when you go in the gate.....the parking lots get crowded early, especially if it's a gorgeous day. If you're with the carpoolers you won't get separated or lost if the upper lot is full. You may not get to find us if you aren't with us or can't call me if you can't park with us.

Carpoolers please split the parking fee and contribute to the gas.

After the hike please DO NOT TOUCH THE GOOD TO SEE YOU BUTTONS!!! Check your computer before you leave if you have doubts about the weather. ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK and you will need to sign a liability waiver to participate. Please send me your cell, I will return with mine. Please, no texts. Cell service is questionable up at Minnewaska, another good reason to carpool, you won't be lost and phone service-less!! :-) $2 Meetup fee except if you are a new friend or over 50 events with me, your adventure is free. :-) Happy day!!

Another awesome day filled with great people, wonderful fall colors, and pea soup fog....I apologize profusely to all for the tortuous final 2 miles of carriage trails which I wanted to experience, but will NEVER subject you to again!! YIKES!!! Who cares about 'better for conversation' when it's all moaning and groaning!! It's like walking on pavement, tough on your feet especially after the first 5 miles...the last also seemed to be all uphill :-). One good thing, we came back the way we started, what was foggy to start opened up to gorgeous views on the way back. Fortunately we ended the day with a yummy potluck lunch which was delicious. Thank you all for contributing, and being part of another great experience!! Happy trails until we meet again. :-)

Sheryl, around what time do you think the hike portion will finish? I am going up to Albany afterwards and cannot join in the potluck, but I would like to hike if it ends early enough.

I will be happy to carpool with anyone from New Paltz, but I am not staying for the potluck.

A few hikes ago, I overheard a few of the women discussing sports in-soles for their hiking boots. I think I would like to try adding them to my boots. Can anyone share what product they used and liked? Thanks!

    October 2, 2013

    • Bill M.

Barbara - I've used insert soles in hiking boots & shoes a long time. Scholls brand - plastic - now has large displays in outdoor stores - even some large chain retailers. You stand on a platform part of their display to measure your foot - a display tells you appropriate size insert to get. I've not tried the new versions - still using some older ones. They work.

Thanks Bill for the good info. I appreciate it. I have been hiking a lot in Cornwall area and am feeling all those rocks by the end of the hike. Hope to see you at our next meet-up. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my query.

What is a "pot luck" lunch. Is there a certain quantity of food I bring?

    1 · September 25, 2013

    • Sheryl

Pot luck is where everyone brings a dish to share, your dish should feed a bunch who will want your dish....perhaps 5-8 or so. Finger food is good on a hike.... :-)

      September 26, 2013

    • Lisa

Ok thanks for the info :)
