Happy Holidays Gertrude's Nose Hike!!

Update!! This is a 9 mile hike. MicroSpikes MANDATORY and I'll need to see them in the parking lot. Please do NOT text me. :-)

Happy Holidays to all!! It's time to work off the holiday cookies..... :-) This is my favorite hike and I can't see the calendar without a GN hike scheduled, let's hope for no snow so we can do this. Once it snows they groom the trails for XC skiiers.

This hike has the most excellent views, varied terrain, no strenuous stuff (besides ups and downs and distance and the last part that is hard because you may be tired), did I say excellent views???? The rocks are just SOOOOOO cool, I can't get enough. Experienced hikers welcome, please no beginners. We will dine in New Paltz afterwards, location TBD.

Lake Minnewaska is a wonderful place to share with friends, and Gertrude's Nose is an AMAZING hike. This will be on carriage roads and on nice hiking trails, 9 miles, TONS of views and great places. It's roughly 20% on carriage roads, 80% on hiking trails. If it's hot you may want to do the final part on carriage trails and avoid the Trail of Tears, but you'll also miss the cool stream that we will rest at before the Miserable Up. I am not doing the carriage trail return trip, period. :-) Please let me know at Millbrook Mountain if you want to do the carriage trail return trip.

This is an intermediate hike with a difficulty level of strenuous. I think I was so distracted by the views and the way cool natural stuff that it didn't seem difficult to me, keep in mind I hike every week. There are no horrible ups or downs but rock scrambling and narrow ledges/rock crevices could be an issue if you are not comfortable with these or are scared of heights. The last part of it is the worst, but you'll get past it and there is a lake at the end to reward your efforts, a gorgeous view. There are a lot of ups and downs, don't be misled, you really need to be in good shape for this hike.

This is not a hike for beginners. You must have hiked with me within 6 months or be known by a local hiking group to join us. I will ask new people to not join us if I don't think you can do this. We will hike at a steady pace, if you are a slow hiker please choose an alternate activity for your day. It is not fair to the rest of the group to wait for long periods for you, sorry. Please trust me if I encourage you to choose a different hike if you are a beginner.

Dress in layers, bring water, hat, sunglasses, first aid, tissues, and don't forget your camera. Hiking boots mandatory. Dress in layers. Part of the trail is seasonally wet, it's really like a stream when the water is running. If you have interesting health issues please let me know in advance.

Being properly prepared means being hydrated before and during the hike, drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of the hike.

Dogs are welcome if well behaved and under control if off leash. They must be leashed at Minnewaska (park rules).

CARPOOL INFO: There is a $8 per car fee for parking. We can carpool from New Paltz or Newburgh, or meet at the upper parking lot of Minnewaska. For friends who are close to Minnewaska we can also collect you from the large lot opposite the Mountain Brauhaus restaurant at the intersection of 299 and 44/55 before you start up the mountain. Carpool would begin (leave at) at 8:40 in Newburgh in the Bed, Bath and Beyond parking lot at the Newburgh Mall. or 9:15 at Mt. Brauhaus, or 9:30 at Minnewaska. Put 'carpool' in your RSVP and the location.....Please don't be late, early is good!

Meet at the upper top parking lot. Go straight and UP when you go in the gate.....the parking lots get crowded early, especially if it's a gorgeous day. If you're with the carpoolers you won't get separated or lost if the upper lot is full. You may not get to find us if you aren't with us or can't call me if you can't park with us.

Carpoolers please split the parking fee and contribute to the gas.

After the hike please DO NOT TOUCH THE GOOD TO SEE YOU BUTTONS!!! Check your computer before you leave if you have doubts about the weather. ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK and you will need to sign a liability waiver to participate. Please send me your cell, I will return with mine. Please, no texts. Cell service is questionable up at Minnewaska, another good reason to carpool, you won't be lost and phone service-less!! :-) $2 Meetup fee except if you are a new friend or over 50 events with me, your adventure is free. :-) Happy day!!

too bad for me. i'm dying to get out, but i know that 9 miles is a big committment. it would be more realistic for me to do a 3 mile jaunt in black rock. is there something coming up thats in the hudson highlands/ cornwall area? could there be ? :)

    Dear OCOS Friends,

I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I was hoping to join you all in this event but it's been 3 years since my last hike, it would be best to pass this one and try baby steps with less strenuous hikes. I wish you all good weather and best of times. Looking forward to seeing you in 2014. Have a healthy, happy New Year!!

Hi Sherly, This hike sounds great. What time do you expect our return? I have to work that evening, so I will not be able to go for dinner. I live in Middletown, so I am more than happy to carpool. I can fit 3pp. I have hiked with AMC and Campers Group. I will message you my cell number. I look forward in meeting you.

Got my spikes. It has been three years since my last hike. Had knee surgery. Have to admit, I'm a little scared. Planning on meeting with the Newburgh carpoolers at BBBs.

IF we can do this hike, approved (by me) SPIKES will be mandatory. I will call a couple of days ahead to see if they are grooming for XC skiing. I'm guessing we will be doing Plan B, Stewart State Forest or something similar, as the snow doesn't go away up there easily. Just forewarning you!!!! GET YOUR SPIKES NOW!!! Santa has lots, just waiting for a good home. :-) Just ask, and if he doesn't hear you, go buy them....look online first. :-)

I may have to change my RSVP later on as the 28th is my niece's birthday. I am hoping to be able to do the hike & then head over to Lagrange for birthday cake but it will depend on what time I am expected to be there. Hopefully, it will be late afternoon. :-)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
