Let's end our January hikes with Mt. Beacon. Mt. Beacon is great for views and a good workout. The first part is STRAIGHT UP on a metal staircase that follows the old incline railway, the history included on this is fascinating, do check out the signage at the parking lot before we ascend.
This is a strenuous hike, I'm thinking 4 1/2 miles. You need to be in shape for this, new hikers may find this one very challenging. It is NOT for beginners. If winter shows it's face you WILL need MicroSpikes or Stabilicers, NO YAKTRAX. I will need to see them before we leave the parking lot.
We won't leave anyone behind but we will move at a steady pace with stops to catch slower friends up. You will not want to do this as a first hike with us, find out your limitations on an easier hike if you're new to hiking.
We will hike to the Fire Tower and back. Trip will be several hours and strenuous but mostly just at the beginning and for the first hour or so. Wet trails may deter us, check back if in doubt. Snow or ice do not deter. Please check your computer beforehand.
Bring lunch, WATER and snacks. Dress in layers and NO COTTON please. You will want hat, gloves, perhaps long johns and snow pants. Fleece and wool will do you well. Bring your camera, and perhaps a change of shirt/shoes for afterwards. We will most likely go out afterwards but bring light lunch or heavy snacks....
Please bring basic first aid items. A first aid kit is just common sense for your own protection!! Hiking boots (or snow boots and spikes) mandatory, hiking poles suggested.
Meet at the Mount Beacon parking lot on 9D at the foot of the mountain. It is where the road curves at the bottom of the city of Beacon. It is well signed. Please check Google maps and punch in 268 Howland Ave, Beacon, NY. This is the closest address I can find. It is at the intersection of 9D and Howland Ave.
$2 Meetup fee unless it's your first event or over 50 events with me, in which case it's free. Please send me your cell for last minute changes, especially if weather is iffy. I will return mine to you. Please do NOT text me. Dogs welcome. You will need to sign a liability waiver to participate. ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Happy trails!!!
