For those hiking, spikes are mandatory. There was still snow up there last weekend, I'm guessing it's still there. I will need to see them before we leave the parking lot. Walkers, spikes are not mandatory but bring them if you have them. :-)
Update!!! We will be doing our usual potluck Bashakill Vineyards thing after this instead of dining.....so bring a dish to share, we will go to the winery and hang out by the fire and eat yummy food...... :-)
This location has the potential to be both a walk and a hike, it will serve both interests. I will be doing the hike UP the mountain, while others may opt for the rail trail from the same parking lot, flat and straight. We will coordinate to end at the same time so we can dine together. The walk is perfect for beginners. :-)
Those who want to hike will enjoy a roughly 4+ mile hike above Wurtsboro on the Long Path. Expect ups and downs and adventure!! This is an intermediate hike with a moderate difficulty level. This is NOT for beginning hikers.
The first part of the hike is the climb to the ridge, so it's got that UP part, combined with possibly a narrow path. There are ups and downs, and rather good views across the Wurtsboro/Ellenville area.
Those that want to walk will enjoy a flat, straightish rail trail experience. You won't have the views but it's a great walk.
Please put 'walking' or 'hiking' in your RSVP so I know who is doing what and others can know they will have company.
Directions: Take 17 west to Exit 114, Wurtsboro/Highview, at the top of the hill, slow down so you don't miss the exit!! (This is NOT THE REGULAR WURTSBORO/ELLENVILLE EXIT!!) Go left off the ramp. .7 mile ahead turn right onto a teeny-tiny road that looks like a ramshackle driveway with a tiny green VFW sign, go in to an old railroad station building which is now a VFW hall. There is a large warning sign on the main road as it is on a huge hairpin turn, 2 red diamonds with a yellow U-turn sign are JUST before the righthand turn. Coming from the west you'll come thru Wurtsboro and go up the hill, make a left at the hairpin turn 1/2 mile below the crest of the hill.
Bring water, first aid, light lunch or heavy snacks, tissues, and don't forget your camera. NO COTTON, period. PLEASE NO JEANS. Hiking boots mandatory. Dress in layers, you will be exposed and frigid when on the rocks.
Dogs are welcome if well behaved and under control if off leash.
We can carpool from Newburgh. Carpool would start at 9:15 in Newburgh in the Bed, Bath and Beyond parking lot at the Newburgh Mall. Put 'carpool' in your RSVP or I won't stop there. Please don't be late, early is good!
Horrible weather changes things. ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK and you will need to sign a liability waiver to participate. Please send me your cell, I will return with mine. Please, no texts. :-) $2 Meetup fee except if you are a new friend or over 50 events with me, your adventure is free. :-) Happy trails!!
