Trail Maintenance - Heritage Trail, Chester!!!

I'm so excited to change this event to a Trail Maintenance opportunity!!! Last year we had a great day working with the Orange County Land Trust to help give back to the trails. This year we will work on the Heritage Trail in Chester. Here's a tiny bit about it:

The April 26th work day will be at Birnberg Preserve, which is OCLT's latest acquisition. It's 187 acres sandwiched between Rt 17 and the Heritage Trail.  The preserve entrance is right off the Heritage Trail, so its extremely accessible! We will park our vehicles at the old Camp Laguardia site. As soon as you enter Camp Laguardia, there is a Heritage Trail parking lot on the left.

Here is a trail/preserve map that we are working on. The "grand opening" of sorts for the preserve will be this summer! We will work from 10 am-12 noon. Activities: Bench installation, litter removal, brush removal.

We will park near the old Camp LaGuardia in Chester, there is a parking lot for the Heritage Trail there. I will post an address and find out what you need to bring, but I'm guessing work gloves, water, and pruning equipment if you have it. Last year they had some equipment if I recall correctly but it's always good to use what you're comfortable with. This is a great way to make a difference in the area we live in or near, and lots of people will be able to benefit from our work. :-)

When we are done we  will stop in at the Rushing Duck Brewery. It is a small craft brewery only steps from the Heritage Trail in Chester. We will stop in there for a free tasting of their delicious brews. If you have a growler do bring it!!!! I will find a place to dine afterwards depending on our numbers.

Cheers!!! Happy Trails!!!! Here we will have them together!!! Or at least following each other. :-)

So Bill inspired me to see what I could do with horrible rusted metal hulks that lurk in the woods....I took today off, and went back to the preserve, hauled out more stuff that I spotted lurking in the bush that we didn't get....I worked very hard and long, it was messy and loud, but I made a piece of artwork worthy of the road.....I combined practicality and a love of beer....I'm pretty proud of myself if I do say so..... :-) Hope you agree!!!! Cheers!!!

Thanks Sheryl for the opportunity to volunteer a little of my time to help with the trail maintenance. It's always a plus to take the time to "give back". It was a fun morning with lots of great company.

WOW!!!! Holy cow, do you guys remember the HORRIBLE, ugly, rusty, nasty, falling-to-bits chair that several people carried out? Our friend Bill snuck back afterwards, brought it home and has given it a new life!!! Check out the last picture for what he did to revive it!!!! Just think what he can do for YOUR old sad things that you SOOOO love and want to restore to full use!!!! :-) Way to go Bill!!! He's truly a genius with untapped talents...... :-)

I am amazed; he's truly talented. I bet he could take the bits and pieces of vehicle we saw in the ditch and restore it to its old self ! ! ! LOL

Sheryl provides us with opportunities to give back to our community and laugh while we're doing it. We also are introduced to unique local businesses. And end our day with ice cream! Thanks Sheryl!!

How did we get to be so lucky? Work doesn't seem like work at all when there's camaraderie ! ! Enjoyed all of it today. Thank you, Sheryl.

It was a great day! It was very nice to be able to help the community. Thanks Sheryl, without you this would not have happened. BTW next time we eat at that pub, my name is Charlie.

A really neat day from start to finish. I loved the trail maintenance, I made a very unhappy tree sing and dance with the help of Tom and John, it's a very happy tree now. It's a nice little preserve, I hope to explore it more in the future. Good job all!!! We had fun at the brewery and a very well-earned meal afterwards. Thanks all for doing a very good thing today. Cheers!!! :-)

Hi Sheryl, I'm sorry for the short notice but I will be unable to attend this am. I over did it yesterday and I'm not feeling well. I tried to find your #. I thought I had it but I guess not. Is there a way I can send you mine without doing a public post?

    Hey Friends,
I may be a tiny bit late tomorrow. Jeremy from the Land Trust will be organizing you if I'm not there. I will join you as soon as I can, I shouldn't be too late at all.
    :-)

    More info for tomorrow:
The approximate address for the Camp Laguardia site is 160 Greycourt Road, Chester NY. That address can be used for Mapquest or GPS. When you enter through the toll booth entrance, the parking area will be on your left. We will have extra water and snacks available, but we recommend people fill up their own reusable bottles beforehand. We will provide hand tools as well. Volunteers are welcome to bring their own tools however! What to bring: Work gloves, sunscreen, bug spray.
What to wear: Long pants, longsleeve shirt, hiking boots or sneakers. Lastly, if possible we should plan on meeting at the parking area around 9:50 am. It's about an 8-10 minute walk to the preserve from the parking area.

I had planned to join, but just changed my RSVP. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it but hope to next time. The Trail means a lot to me, and I was excited to be a part of this project. Have a great day.
