Happy Father's Day Schunemunk Hike!!!

  • Jun 15, 2014 · 10:00 AM

This will be our tried and true Schunemunk hike, from the Hikers Parking Lot to Megaliths and back.....Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there!!!!

Let's hike one great local mountain, Schunemunk, it's always a great of my favorites. It's the ridge along Rt. 32 above Highland Mills on the Blooming Grove side. Terrain is moderate, there are lots of ups and downs, rocks, and great views.

If you like to study rocks, Schunemunk really has unique rocks, you may want to research them before we go. It is not flat, there is a LOT of work involved here! This is a strenuous hike, not for beginners or those who don't hike regularly. There is no Plan B for this one. Hiking boots necessary!!! This is not a hike for NEW hiking boots. :-)

There is 1700 feet of elevation that we have to go up, and then back down, it is a LOT of work. If you have health issues, this is not the mountain for you as there is no escape hatch.....I strongly caution new hikers that this is not an easy mountain and I don't want you to hate me!! :-) We will eat lunch at Megaliths, a very cool rock spot with great views. (It is not a restaurant!!). I estimate 5 hours, depending on the group, and the stops for breaks. It is at least 6.5 miles....

Footwear is important, hiking boots are mandatory, especially with slippery leaves. Dress in layers, and be prepared for rain. Bring extra socks :-), lunch, water, hat, gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses are important. Don't forget your camera! Please also pack basic first aid including moleskin for blisters.

Bad weather cancels or postpones so stay tuned. Please email me your cell and I will return with mine. Please check your email before the hike! We will dine afterwards, bring a clean shirt and spare shoes to change into.

All hikes are at your own risk and you will need to sign a liability waiver to participate.

Meet at Hiker's Parking lot:
From Rt. 32 south of Vails Gate (5 Corners), turn opposite Angola Rd. onto Pleasant Hill Rd at Black Rock Gun Club sign. Make first left over Moodna Creek onto Taylor Rd., then hiking parking is just ahead on the right past Creekside Lane. If you MapQuest it it is on Taylor Rd and Shaw Rd. or Taylor and Creekside Lane.

Here's a map:

For GPS it might work as 12 Taylor Road, New Windsor, NY 12553. Black Rock Fish and Game (or Rod and Gun Club) is nearby, then follow my directions above. They are at 5 Pleasant Hill Road, Mountainville but I can't get a map to work for me for you. Try the map link just above. :-)

This is a great hike, I hope you can make it! Dogs welcome on leashes UNLESS THEY ARE SCARED OF GUNSHOTS in which case leave them home!!!! There is a gun club nearby. $2 Meetup fee unless it's your first event or over 50 events with me, in which case it's free. After the hike please do not touch the Good To See You buttons and if you need me please DO NOT text me, I do not text. Happy day!!! :-)

I always enjoy doing this hike because it's such a great workout and the fact that it's only 2 miles from my front door makes it my favorite hike. Thank you Lynn for the yummy pre-hike blueberry pancake breakfast, Mother Nature for the beautiful, warm, sunny day and a very special thank you to you Sheryl for all your efforts in putting together our wonderful meetups.
