Happy August Mt. Beacon Hike!!

Hike!! Hike!!! Let's hike!! Mt. Beacon is great for views and a good workout. The first part is STRAIGHT UP on a metal staircase that follows the old incline railway, the history included on this is fascinating, do check out the signage at the parking lot before we ascend. It is VERY important that you hydrate the day before the hike and eat a good breakfast.

This is a strenuous hike, I'm thinking 4 1/2 miles but we could do more if it's not too hot and the group is up for it. It is not for beginners unless you hike regularly or are in very good shape and are properly prepared.

We will hike to the Fire Tower and back with possible detour to the reservoir if the group is up to it and it's not too hot. Trip will be several hours and strenuous but mostly just at the beginning and for the first hour or so. We will go out afterwards, location TBD.

Bring WATER and snacks, camera, suntan lotion, hat, and perhaps a change of shirt/shoes for afterwards. Please bring extra water, you will need it. Please also bring basic first aid items. A first aid kit is just common sense for your own protection!! Hiking boots mandatory, hiking poles suggested.

Meet at the Mount Beacon parking lot on 9D at the foot of the mountain. It is where the road curves at the bottom of the city of Beacon. It is well signed. Please check Google maps and punch in 268 Howland Ave, Beacon, NY. This is the closest address I can find. It is at the intersection of 9D and Howland Ave.

$2 Meetup fee unless it's your first event or over 50 events with me, in which case it's free. Please send me your cell for last minute changes, especially if weather is iffy. I will return mine to you. Please do NOT text me. If you sign up please show up, newbie no-shows will be deleted from the group. Dogs welcome but be aware of a hot car while we dine..... ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Happy trails!!!

Thank you Sheryl for the great hike! I've been passed out since I got back. Nothing like a good day of hiking and a few flagons of ale to strengthen up your soul and spirits! Till next time.

Getting out the door a little later than I'd planned. I understand if you can't wait (prob 10 min late if there's traffic) but I am coming.

When it says hiking boots required, can we get by with regular shoes? Traveling for work and didn't pack boots just my running shoes. Also when you say this is for people who are at least in shape, how in shape? Really want to join but nervous about it. Last time I was in town I made the initial rocky climb but ran out of sunlight. Hope to make the whole hike this time.

You don't necessarily need boots for this hike; less mud, more rock. But your shoes would probably get a bit dirty. As far as difficulty, the initial few switchbacks are a little steep but steady out after that.

I would love to join you but the words 'straight up' and strenuous are making me think twice. Nothing worse than holding back the others.

Saturday's weather looks great. Sorry to miss the hike but I am participating in a fund raiser for the Mohonk Preserve. Enjoy your day.

This hike is fine for beginners who are in shape and properly equipped. There are more hikes for beginners in the fall, stay tuned!! :-)
