HIke San Lorenzo Canyon near Soccoro

  • April 11, 2013 · 8:00 AM

San Lorenzo Canyon is located just NW of Soccoro NM near the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. I was asked to schedule this hike by a lady who is now working, but maybe she can make it anyway. The driving distance is about 90 miles one way. Hiking distance will be 4-8 miles, with an elevation gain of about 100 feet. The canyon is made up of side canyons that the group can explore. I would rate this hike as EASY. NO DOGS or WHINERS! The book "100 Hikes in New Mexico" states that any vehicle can make the drive in dry weather. Everyone is welcome except those who can't keep up on an EASY hike, you know who you are! For more information call me at[masked] or ask your questions on this site.

Now cut it out, kids! Mom's had a hard day subbing for kindergarten & first grade. I so appreciate my grown-up friends (& leaders) :)

On the next hike that you two are on, I'm bringing a bridle to put on the "nags".

Yeah Larry! You're just going to have to knock off all the nagging or I'm telling Marcy on you and she may not let you come out and play with us anymore.

Great day for hiking near Soccoro! Went 5 miles thru some very nice canyons, a little climbing, a little dry, lots of trash and litter in the area. Get into the side canyons and it was really nice. El Sombreo served us a nice early dinner! Thanks everyone for being a great group to follow!

The group will be stopping at the Lemitar gas station if you would want to meet us there.

Sure. I'll be there around 9:00. Assuming it takes you a few minutes after 8:00 to get on the road, that should be about right.

I remember it pretty well and I have a map, so I'm sure I can get us there.

Yes I meant Menaul and Carlisle. I haven't been to the Canyon in a long time either. Not real sure how to get there but have a book.

Larry, did you mean Carlisle and Menaul, not Carlisle and Montgomery, for the meeting place? We often use the old Smiths lot at Carlisle and Menaul and I don't think there's one at Carlisle and Montgomery.

Not entirely sure this far in advance, but I'd like to go. I used to know SLC well but haven't been there in years.
