The Kayaker Safety Meeting will be held on July 30, 2014 at Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries, 199 Main St., Beacon, NY, at 7:00pm. It is not mandatory that you attend, but it is a good idea if you've never done the swim before.
If you have not registered at Riverpool.org you really should as the event is this weekend. Again, I will not be attending the swim, but I hope that doesn't affect your participation. Happy paddling!!
This is a fundraiser for the Riverpool swimming pool in Beacon. Swimmers swim from Newburgh to Beacon, the kayakers accompany them for safety. The river is closed to regular traffic so everyone is safe.
You first paddle from Beacon to Newburgh, wait for the swimming part to start, and kayak between the swimmers back to Beacon so if they need help or to rest we are there. There is a safety course ahead of time in July in Beacon for kayakers.
It is a great opportunity to do a good thing and help a swimmer raise money for a great local thing for kids. Check out riverpool.org to register as a kayaker. There is no fee for kayakers. You may choose to dine together afterwards.
Bring a snack, hat, sunglasses, suntan lotion, camera, change of shirt/shoes for dining afterwards. Boat pump, PFD with whistle, extra ropes mandatory.
You will get direct emails when you register. Please put REGISTERED in your RSVP so I know who is serious. Rain date is Sunday the 3rd. You can check the status of the weather/swim beforehand on the riverpool.org site. Happy paddling!!!
