Leisurely beach hike at Crystal Cove State Park

  • Crystal Cove State Park

This is one of the most beautiful sections of coastline heading south from Newport Beach before reaching Laguna Beach. The hike will start from the north end of the park on the beach and will be approximately 6 miles round trip. This is not a short walk, so allow from 2 to 4 hours depending on our pace and how often we stop to look at the tide pools, or the bird life. It will be an excellent time to be there since low tide will be shortly after 10 AM. Sometimes dolphins can be seen offshore and there's plenty of birds too. Occasionally there’s a resident roadrunner who stands by the trail leading to the beach to beg for food. It is illegal to feed the wildlife here, so don’t feed the roadrunner! Lastly, if you're thinking of bringing your dog, don't. Pets are not allowed on the beaches in the California State Park system.

It is a level hike on mostly sand with a rocky section near the beginning. We will hike at a leisurely pace, but we will hike! We’ll make a stop to look at the tide pools as we walk south, then we will take a break at the southern end of the beach, then we will return to the start. Although this will be a leisurely paced hike, it is not for those who have any kind of disability or trouble walking on rough surfaces, but is suitable for beginning hikers. Proper footwear will be required. Hiking boots or shoes are advised but sneakers are acceptable. NO bare feet until you actually get on the sand. River sandals such as those made by Teva, Keen, or Merrell are the best. NO FLIP-FLOPS! Wear appropriate clothing suitable for a beach walk. Check the weather. If it’s going to be cool you may want to bring a light jacket. Wear sunscreen and bring a hat and sunglasses. It may be foggy or overcast, but again it may be bright and sunny. Bring a water bottle and any snacks you’d like to munch on. Fanny or waist packs are ideal for carrying these items.

We will meet at the northernmost parking area and start hiking at 9:30 AM sharp. Please don’t be late. This is a state park and there is an entrance fee of $15 at the entrance. If driving southbound from Newport Beach/Corona Del Mar on Pacific Coast Highway, proceed to the Pelican Point entrance which is directly across from Newport Coast Drive and turn right into the park entrance. If driving northbound from Laguna Beach, continue north on Pacific Coast Highway until your reach the Pelican Point/ Newport Coast road sign and turn left into the park. When you enter at the kiosk make a right turn after paying the fee and proceed to the northernmost parking lot. If the attendant is present, you can ask for directions, but it isn’t hard to find. This is where we will meet. Look for my vehicle, a red 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. I'll be wearing a khaki boonie hat. Restroom facilities with drinking fountain and shower to rinse off your feet are available and very well maintained.

For those of us who have built up an appetite, we will have lunch/brunch at the Pacific Whey Cafe in the Crystal Cove Promenade after the hike. The food is here is delicious and maybe even healthy!

I'm sure it was fine for those who were able to make it. I, unfortunately was ill with a severe tooth infection and meet all the attendees and explained to route to them so they could proceed on their own.

The lack of RSVPs on this particular Meetup.com site doesn't indicate how many people are going since this event is also being promoted on other Meetup.com sites. So far it looks like 7-9 hikers will be in attendance from all Meetup.com sites.

I never trust GPS. I prefer maps like Bing maps or Google maps. However, enjoy the park while you're here!

Greetings fellow hikers! As of right now, it's looks like we'll have 8-10 hikers attending on Saturday. The weather forecast is for a high of 72 degrees and mostly sunny! It sounds like perfect hiking weather, not too hot, and not too cool. See you there!
