This is one of the most beautiful sections of coastline heading south from Newport Beach before reaching Laguna Beach. The hike will start from the north end of the park on the beach and will be approximately 6 miles round trip. This is not a short walk, so allow from 3 to 5 hours depending on our pace and how often we stop to look at the tide pools, or the bird life. It will be an optimal time to be there since low tide will be at 11:15 AM. Sometimes dolphins and harbor seals can be seen offshore and there's plenty of birds too. Pets are not allowed on the beaches in the California State Park system so please leave your pet at home.
It is a level hike on mostly sand with a rocky section near the beginning. We will hike at a leisurely pace, but we will hike! We’ll make some stops to look at the tide pools . Although this will be a leisurely paced hike, it is not for those who have any kind of disability or trouble walking on rough surfaces, but is suitable for beginning hikers. Proper footwear will be required. Hiking boots or shoes are advised but sneakers are acceptable. NO bare feet until you actually get on the sand. River sandals such as those made by Teva, Keen, or Merrell are the best. NO FLIP-FLOPS! Wear appropriate clothing suitable for a spring beach walk. Check the weather. You may want to bring a light jacket. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. It may be foggy or overcast, but again it may be bright and sunny. Bring a water bottle and any snacks you’d like to munch on. Fanny or waist packs are ideal for carrying these items.
We will meet at the northernmost parking area, Parking Lot 1, and start hiking at 9:31 AM sharp. Please don’t be late. I recommend arriving 15 minutes early, so we don't get held up waiting for stragglers. This is a state park and there is an entrance fee of $15 at the entrance. If driving southbound from Newport Beach/Corona Del Mar on Pacific Coast Highway, proceed to the Pelican Point entrance which is directly across from Newport Coast Drive and turn right into the park entrance. If driving northbound from Laguna Beach, continue north on Pacific Coast Highway until your reach the Pelican Point/Newport Coast road sign and turn left into the park. When you enter at the kiosk make a right turn after paying the fee and proceed to the northernmost parking lot (Parking Lot 1). If the attendant is present, you can ask for directions, but it isn’t hard to find. This is where we will meet. Look for my vehicle, a red 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. I'll be wearing a khaki boonie hat.
WARNING: If you use GPS to find the parking lot, you will get lost and not find the meeting location. Use map reading skills and follow the directions I've written here and you'll find us with no problem. I can't stress this enough: DON'T RELY ON GPS!
Restroom facilities with drinking fountain and shower to rinse off your feet are available, clean, and well maintained.
For those of us who have built up an appetite, we will have a late lunch at eatery in the Crystal Cove Promenade after the hike, which will be around 2:30 to 3 PM
