literature: writing a book

what we are doing:

It’s said that everyone has at least one book in them, but how do you go about “getting it out”? In this class we’ll look at the process of writing a substantial piece of work, (fiction or non-fiction), what to do with it once you’ve finished, and your options for getting it published.

what you will learn

* The physical process of writing: when to, where to and how to go about it.
* So, you’ve finished. That’s what you think!
* Second opinions: do’s and don’ts.
* Publication options: electronic or hard copy?
* The New Zealand scene: agents and publishers.
* Working with editors.
* Marketing your book.

type of class: introduction

skill required: 1-beginner

your chalklers will be:

Geoff Palmer is an award-winning technology writer based in Wellington.
Best known for his columns and website blog for New Zealand PC World, Palmer has won four Qantas Media Awards and was short-listed for Columnist of the Year in 2002.
His first novel, Telling Stories, won the North & South/Reed Fiction Award in 1995 and was published by Secker & Warburg in 1996. His latest novel, Too Many Zeros, the first part of a rollicking science fiction adventure series set in a tiny West Coast town, was published by Penguin in early 2011.

    Was a really good intro class on where to start with writing a book. Lots of good tips on how to build the discipline to actually get it written, and how to go about getting published. Nice relaxed presentation.
