language & culture: introduction to tournament scrabble

what we are doing

In this class we will look at how club and tournament Scrabble differs from the box rules: official word lists, score sheets (including tile tracking), time clocks, challenge rule(s).
Also, how to choose which words to learn, some of the variant games that get played for entertainment or practice.

what you will learn

What entering a Scrabble tournament would be like, and what you would need to know to enjoy the experience.

type of class introduction

your chalkler will be

Steven Brown
As of the beginning of this year, I'm a NZ Grand Master in Scrabble (based on my performance over the last 5 years (just not the last year or two - not too many GM-level performances recently!)).

Editors note: Steven is actually a world ranked scrabble player!

Steven's response: was, before my NZ ranking slipped, and my world ranking lapsed through not playing internationally.

Hi Sue - would you be able to do this in a week's time? I think I'm going to have to postpone now everyone else has pulled out.
