life skills: green parenting

what we are doing

The workshop includes sections of powerpoint presentation where we'll cover why we think you should care about sustainable parenting, and what actions you can take to leave a lighter footprint on the planet. The workshop also includes interactive hands on activities including how to measure your shower flow rate, then calculate how much water you use for each shower, for your household's showers over a year, and how much this all costs you. We'll be making some green laundry powder and you'll be able to take a sample home with you to try. There will be time for questions. It's designed to be fun and easygoing. There'll be a space for kids to do some colouring in, so feel free to bring them along.

what you will learn

In this workshop we'll cover waste, waste water, energy and water conservation.

In the waste section we'll focus on nappies - reusable options as well as composting options for disposables. Attend the workshop and you'll go in the draw to win a set of Punga Tails reusable nappies.

In the waste water section we'll look at some of the nastier ingredients in household cleaners that go down the drain. We'll offer some greener cleaning solutions and have a go at making some green laundry powder.

In the energy section we'll look at keeping a warm dry home without maxing out our heating bill this winter. You'll get a free low energy light bulb to take away with you.

In the water section we'll look at why it's important to conserve water, and where we should direct our water conservation efforts at home. We'll measure the shower flow rate at the ASB sports centre and use these figures to calculate how much it would cost to heat water for showers for an average family home.
