computers & technology: introduction to programming with python

what we are doing

This 2 hour introductory class is for people who have always wanted to learn or considered learning a programming language but are too anxious/busy to dive in on their own. This class will provide a very informal introduction to programming with Python (python.org).

The class will be divided into two parts. The first part involves the nitty gritty of installing Python and short lecture on programming principles. The second part will be spent applying the programming concepts with a series of fun challenges. Attendees are encouraged to team up and behave outrageously (while programming, of course) during this part!

what you will learn

- How to install the python programming language for your specific operating system (Windows, Mac or Linux)
- How to install additional modules
- Programming basics
- conditionals
- loops
- functions
- writing a script
- a little bit of text processing (time dependent)

To learn basic programming concepts, we will follow some examples from the free book ""Think Python"" by Allen Downey (for those who are keen, you can download the full book at greenteapress.com). Downey's example are quite fun and utilise a turtle to draw cool shapes constructed with loops, conditionals and functions. We will also dabble in some text analysis (if time and enthusiasm permits).

At the end of this class, you will be able to program!

I'm sorry I missed this, I thought I saved the date in my calendar, unfortunately not. How can I pay a no show fee?

Although it took a while for everyone to get Python installed (mainly because of the different OS systems people were running) Shrividya's boundless enthusiasm for Python kept the group motivated. The meeting has motivated me to keep exploring Python.

No worries, Carol. I hope you feel better! I am grappling with github at the moment but once I get that sorted, I can post the links to the class materials. That way, you can have a go with the programming in your own time.

I notice that this chalkle class takes donation: can someone please shed some light on how would I contribute? (e.g: cash at door or else). thanks

Sorry, the "how to get there" was a mistake. I corrected. The right address is the Boardroom at Enspiral office (in Allen st)

Is the location correct or is the "how to get there" section correct? They don't seem to match. Let me know, please. Thanx!
