science: behold! the mighty kraken - a cryptozoological lesson on monsters

what we are doing

Are you interested in mythical beasts of yore and legend? There is none more devastatingly frightful - and more real! - than the mighty KRAKEN. Hellbringer sent by the gods, tormenting seafarers over millenia, long speculated upon and finally found, but only dying or as rotting carcasses. Alas! Millions of dollars and years of preparation have finally led to a real, filmed sighting of the living beast. Come and learn about all things Kraken, cephalopods and cryptozoology. You will never view the sea in the same light again...

We will cover a broad range of subjects and topics, from history, anthropology, zoology, marine biology, sociology and media studies. The class outline is:

  • An introduction to Cryptozoology
  • A short history of Kraken-related myths and legends
  • Kraken sightings and stories
  • Kraken (cephalopod) evolution, biology, physiology and behaviour
  • The Kraken in modern culture

what you will learn

You will dive into a subject of great intrigue and mystery, a beast that has inspired fear and wonder in people for millennia. The mighty Kraken, most fearsome of all sea monsters is a real, living being, and it has finally been filmed in action.

There is a lot of lore and myth attached to the Kraken, and in this class you will learn some of the history, the stories and the meaning of the Kraken to our ancestors. But you will also learn about the truth - who the Kraken really is, what (little) we know about its biology, physiology, evolution and behaviour (and that of its closest relatives) and what it means that we have recently, finally uncovered a living example.

You can expect a very wide-ranging look at this magical beast through a variety of scientific disciplines.

your chalkler will be

Dr Sea Rotmann has a PhD in marine biology. Alas, her strong expertise in tropical coral reefs did not help her much when moving to cold, temperate New Zealand waters, so she has since become an energy efficiency and (human) behaviour change professional.

Her hobbies are still largely marine-related - SCUBA diving and snorkeling, underwater photography, keeping a large aquarium in her living room and anything related to the mighty Kraken.

Interesting and fun presentation. Learnt some new things (Cephalopod life spans and reproduction) and reminded of things I'd forgoten.
Personally I doubt if the ancient Mediterranean sea monsters are linked to Giant Squid but that did not detract from the story being told.
Thank you Sea for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for Kraken!

Apologies for the time and date change - there weren't enough people to warrant the large space in the Trust and the boardroom wasn't available tonight. Sorry to see Elf can't make it.
