what you'll learn

Bone carving is an ancient craft-art. It is a very traditional New Zealand art form. Come and learn the basics of this object art practice. You will be introduced to the skills and techniques of designing and producing a small sculpture, using bone . You will also create a simple bone form, it can be wearable or not - a piece to be mounted on the wall, a fondle peice for your pocket. Suitable for people with basic tool use skills, or it can be a way to learn more about hand tools.

what people need to bring

All tools & materials will be provided, and if you have files, small saws, etc you can bring them. Sometimes it is usefull if you have ideas and tools but are unsure where to go with them to bring them to a class so we can discuss what you could do after the clas with what you have assesable to you.

your chalkler will be

My name is Aaron Frater, I have been involved in art (sculptural art primarily) for most of my life. Carving is something I always wanted to learn as a child, and at 20 I finally found someone to get me started.

Carving is reductive sculpture, it has challenges and joys that are differnt to building 3D objects - it is a liberating of a from from a lump of materil (bone in this case).

My art is a language to me. This language continues to evolve as I use materials and respond to new stimulus. There is always a dance, an interplay, between tools, materials and ideas in 3D art making. All ares need to be brought to bare on a work for it to realise its fullness of form, design, and strength.
