The other day I sent out some “feelers” to see if anyone would be interested in having some type of counter action to the Governor calling the decorated tree in the state in the state house a “holiday tree” as opposed to a “Christmas tree”. Rep Costa is hosting her own tree lighting Dec 6 5:30 pm
in her office at the state house insisting that it be called a “Christmas tree”. http://articles.boston.com/2011-12-02/news/30468615_1_lighting-ceremony-christmas-tree-blue-spruce Her instance that this decoration be called by its religious name, based on a poorly written and executed resolution Costa authored last January. This resolution which does not hold the power of law, requires that state officials and departments refer to the tree customarily erected or displayed in celebration of the period from Thanksgiving of each year to January of the following year as a ‘Christmas tree’ and not as a ‘holiday tree’ or other non-traditional terms. Keep in mind that this was Costa’s FIRST act as a state representative she did this, before balancing the budget, creating small government or fighting for conservative social values, all things that the Tea Party voted her in to office to do.
Now Costa wants to make it seem as if here resolution speaks on behalf of all people by implying the Governor is ignoring the peoples voice by calling it a holiday tree. http://www.920whjj.com/player/?station=WHJJ-AM&program_name=podcast&program_id=helenglover.xml&mid=21625236. The local talk show hosts are feeding the flames of this http://www.920whjj.com/player/?station=WHJJ-AM&program_name=podcast&program_id=helenglover.xml&mid=21629327. This is an attempt to have a religious name forced upon all citizens. One of the most hilarious claims that they are making is that since the trees were grown on Christmas tree farms or are decorated in people’s homes they are therefore by default are called Christmas tree, this would suggest that these tree are genetically different then other trees.
It is important to make all voices heard including atheist’s. Costa does not speak for you or I. and we should be there to make that known. Up to now I have only heard from two people who are willing to stand up and add their voice to the mix. I am have mixed feelings about this, on one hand I would like to take anyone with me to the state house to protest Costa’s religious state funded display. At the same time I think it would do more harm to our cause if only 3 people show up. So if you would like to join us please let me know bring a sign with you. If we have enough people lets do this
