Adam,

When laws and economics are skewed we are fucked...

Romney was talking about "envy" and "it's OK to talk about income inequality in "quiet rooms" and "tax policy discussions" and this seems to be a normal way of thinking in the US

The Last Word - What Romney talks about in quiet rooms
The subject is income inequality, or what Mitt Romney calls "the politics of envy." MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell talks to The New Republic's Timothy Noah about his new book "The Great Divergence," which examines the rise of inequality in America and the political and cultural changes that are continuing to exacerbate the widening gap between the very, very rich and everyone else.

If working folks really knew that productivity did not contribute to income increases to middle and lower classes over past 30 years or so and that today's minimum wage is really about 30% lower adjused for inflation than 30 years ago and how much fun the rich are having there would be another wave of "Occupy WallStreet" turning into "Occupy Mainstreet" and mass protests hopefully could get rid of money in politics as the main issue as I see it.

KAKU!!!

As a good friend of mine who teaches astrophysics says when asked what he thinks of Kaku.... "he has nice hair."
Kaku is so interested in "promoting" the future that he has basically uncoupled his predictions and philosophy from reality.

I would love to live in his world, but it ain't coming!

Utopia from nanotech?  For a much better discussion of what we could get try reading "The Diamond Age" bu Neil Stevenson which, being a total work of fiction, delves in to the impact of a replicator based economy with a great deal of insight.

No matter the economic foundation of society, there will always be an unequal distribution of stuff, human nature simply leads to that reality.  It is nice to imagine a truly egalitarian society, but I dont see it happening while we can still be called human.  Even in the "animal world" the closest you come to seeing it is among hive insects, and even those have the queens and the workers.
