RE: [skeptics-137] ARTICLE FROM ALTERNET

I'm with Penny.  I don't like Werleman defining what publicity methods atheists should/shouldn't use.  He forgets that the pope has a continuous, high-profile platform from which to spin a new image for the CC.  I see Francis as trying to give the church a makeover.  The hypocrisy of him calling for the world to care for the poor when the shelves holding the documents that the church owns in the vatican library alone total 31 miles long and their sale could feed millions of the poor is just beyond the pale.

Why do we have to operate under a banner anyway?  If a person wants to do something about any cause, they can do it without calling attention to their faith or lack thereof.

So what we atheists say or do is fodder for the right?  We still need to take our stand unapologetically.

Well, I do like this pope, and agree with Werleman on that, however, I have mixed feelings about the atheist billboards.

After all, Werleman has also written things like "To offer your life in servitude of an unseen sky-god based on the writings included in a book you have never read, seems to me to be the far limit of irrationality." and "It becomes obvious then, that the Bible is . . . the often incoherent rants of a few violent, self-serving, nomadic Middle Eastern yokels" (God Hates You, Hate Him Back, 2010).

It seems that Werleman is suggesting that it's OK to write whatever you want, but it's bad PR to put it on a billboard.

I do agree with his point about teaming up with people of faith to fight capitalism-on-steroids.
