Our group promotes science, reason, and free exchange of ideas. We started out as a Center for Inquiry discussion group, but we decided to become independent, and so now we have nothing officially to do with the Center for Inquiry. Nevertheless, we are sympathetic to their causes, and we applaud the efforts of all skeptics groups. We encourage darned near anything scientific, and we want to do our part to promote rational thought in public discourse. (Your rationality in private is none of our business.)
Most months, we have an educational meeting. Recent topics have ranged from the threat of bioterrorism (not much threat) to the role of the humanities in a technological society (a major role in deciding what values are important). Members have the opportunity to fellowship with other free thinkers.
Anyone can "join" the Meetup site, and anyone can attend a meeting, but to actually join the Bakersfield Area Skeptics Society requires completion of a membership form (click on "files" to the left) and payment of dues. Only members may vote in meetings. Not everyone who is a member of this Meetup site is a member of Bakersfield Area Skeptics Society, and not everyone who is a member of Bakersfield Area Skeptics Society is a member of this Meetup site. The Skeptics Society just uses the site as a tool.
As a consequence of the above, please be aware that email exchanges sometimes develop through this site that do not in any way reflect the collective thoughts of the Bakersfield Area Skeptics Society. Many individuals who exchange emails through this site are not members of the Bakersfield Area Skeptic Society. The discourse at meetings of the Bakersfield Area Skeptics Society is usually courteous and civil.
