Sketching the new East River Promenade

Feel like drawing bridges? The East River Promenade was overhauled recently, and it's a beautiful walk. We're going to start by meeting up at the circle in the middle of Corlears Hook Park (Fun fact for the kids: this is where the term hooker comes from. But the area has been cleaned up a bit since the 1820s.) Then we'll walk and sketch along the promenade, including under the Williamsburg bridge.

Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at [masked].

What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? There's no instruction, but we like to share our work, and chat and be inspired. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome!

  • We sketch for a bit, usually 45 minutes or so, and then get back together and share our drawings, and then sketch again, etc. There's usually time for 3 or 4 sketches.
  • Feel free to bring any media you like to work with - pens, pencil, watercolor, pastel, small sketchbook or large paper, iPad, whatever suits you.
  • We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another!
  • We take photos to share on the site later. Bring your camera!
  • The event will last three hours.
  • This Meetup is FREE and everyone at all skill levels is welcome!

In case of rain, I will let people know early in the morning if it is canceled, and then reschedule for another day.

Looking forward to sketching with you!

Since this is a long trip for some people, you might want to know that the only restroom open on the grounds is in the East River Fireboat house, about 1/4 of a mile from where we are meeting.

    September 26, 2013

    • Jesse R.

That fireboat house - if it's the same one I'm thinking of, near Grand st. - is actually right in the center of the various spots where we'll be sketching.

what is closest manhattan bus stop or subway connection?

    September 26, 2013

  • Nancy

Seems like this location is causing transportation anxiety. Can next location be easier to get to please?

    September 26, 2013

    • Jesse R.

The next one is in the East Meadow, so it should be easier to get to. But in general, one of the reasons I've found increasingly obscure and out-of-the-way parks - besides the fact that it's fun seeing new spots - is that the group is too big. Years ago, we sketched at Bethesda Fountain, Bryant Park, and other easy tourist spots but now we're just too large a group. When I pick a spot like that and place an attendee limit, people complain that they're on the waiting list.

I've had trouble with the F train on weekends in the past. I'm planning to take the M.

    September 25, 2013

    • Douglas H.

THe M may not run on weekends, check with mta.com

      September 25, 2013

  • Susan S.

Sauf means safe in French but in mother tongue the F is unsafe on weekend. Careful typing: Beware F on weekend.

    September 25, 2013

  • Ash

I'll be coming in from Sunnyside, Queens if anyone wants to meet up.

    September 24, 2013

    • Ash

I was probably going to walk to the F and transfer to the 7 at Bryant Park.

      September 25, 2013

    • Douglas H.

It's a good walk from that park to the East Broadway Station. You have watch out if the F stops there on the weekend. In fact last weekend the F took me to Brooklyn without any announcement skipping the E.Broadway station.

      September 25, 2013

  • Thelma S.

sorry I can't come. I have 3 broken ribs. Hopefully next time. Thelma

Wish I could make it to what sounds like a great meet-up, but I'll be selling books (and hopefully, paintings) at Grace & St Paul Church's fall fair on Saturday. (If anyone plans to be around West 71st St Saturday PM, do stop by -- it looks like it's going to be a fun event.)

is anyone going from nj or port authority nyc or penn station and can meet me?

    September 23, 2013

    • Douglas H.

If you are at Penn Station, your best bet is to take the A,E or C train downtown to 14 St. and pick up M14A bus eastbound to the lower east side. Ask the driver to let you off when you are closest to Corlears Hook Park. This bus should take you all the way there. The weekend rerouting of the F trains(which happens sometimes), if that happens would not factor in this. Sometimes they would reroute the E train to the F line, in that case you still have the A and C trains. If you don't want the trains, you can take the M5 and M7 buses downtown to transfer to the M14A near the corner of 34th St/7th Ave. Have a safe trip all.

      September 24, 2013

    • Douglas H.

Just to clarify, you pick up the M5, M7 near 34th St./7th Ave. southbound and transfer to the M14A near the southeast corner of 14th St/7th Ave. eastbound.

      September 24, 2013

  • Douglas H.

Take the 6 to Bleecker, transfer to the F towards Brooklyn, get off at East Broadway, that's the closest station. To cut down on walking, walk two blocks on Rutgers southwards to Madison from the station and take the M22 bus eastwards on Madison to Jackson St. Alternatively....even easier, take the M14A bus on 14th St to the Lower East Side/Seward Park, get off at Jackson/Cherry St, you are very close to the park.

    September 23, 2013

  • Susan S.

V hard to find via public transportation. I am going to shoot to Canal on 6 and take a walk. Allowing 30 minutes for the walk and I go at a fair clip. Hope this helps. :/

I'm near east 23 and second avenue.I'm taking the M15 to e.14 street, then the M14D to delancey st./FDR drive...whole trip should take me about 35 minutes.....maybe you can use this.

I must say that the main reason my friend and I joined this meetup group was because it is held on the weekends. :-) weekdays would be impossible for us both. Although a member of the NAC we cannot attend the sketch classes there with Simon because they are always during the week. Since we found this meetup group we have found the locations great, the other artists delightful and Jesse a terrific organizer of these special gatherings. Thank you Jesse!
