Portrait Practice in Central Park!

Trying something new! What's the best way to practice portraiture? On each other!

That's right ... for this special meetup, we're going to partner up and take turns drawing each other. We'll meet at 5th ave and 99th street, and then walk into the East Meadow together. Everyone will pick a partner and have a half hour to draw them. Then we'll switch. Make sure you're comfortable sitting on grass because there might not be enough benches and rocks for everyone (or bring a blanket or stool, if you like.) After those two sessions, we'll take a look at all the art. Then we'll pick new partners and try it again.

So, to attend, you need to: be willing to get drawn; be able to sit still for a half hour as a model; and be comfortable sitting in a meadow. And please dress appropriately in case it's cold. Also, please don't shy away from this event due to art inexperience ... this is a sketch group, not a finished painting group. The goal is to create a fun and expressive sketch, or just use the time for practice, even if you don't think you captured a likeness perfectly. No one is expecting full-body Sargent oil portraits.

This should be a great way to both create some cool sketches and meet new people at the same time. Hope to see you there!

Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at [masked].

What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? There's no instruction, but we like to share our work, and chat and be inspired. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome!

Feel free to bring any media you like to work with - pens, pencil, watercolor, pastel, small sketchbook or large paper, iPad, whatever suits you.

We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another!

We take photos to share on the site later. Bring your camera!

The event will last ~3 hours.

This Meetup is FREE and everyone at all skill levels is welcome!

In case of rain, I will let people know early in the morning if it is canceled, and then reschedule for another day.

Looking forward to sketching with you!

Hi! Someone forgot his sketchbook in Central Park today. The name on the first page says "Jorge Weiss". I've been waiting just in case, but I have to leave and I don't want to leave the sketchbook here, it has some amazing art! I can't make it for the next meeting, but I can drop it somewhere, mail it to you or meet in person. Whatever works better for you. My email is [masked]. Thanks all for the event today it was great! • Kathryn t c.

No Ruth the best part is Meeting all of the wonderful folks who love art as much as we do and may feel just like us as "Non pros" Smiles! ;-) art should really just come from the heart shouldn't it? I love our group and as we get to know each other it becomes more and more fun! Don't just make a Res ATTEND :-) and enjoy the fun. Jesse is great, there's no competition and no one will judge your art. You will be pleasantly surprised just how wonderful the experience can be! But most of all... Please say Hello ok? :-)

    October 8, 2013

  • Caren A.

I am just a little all around shy. I worry about finding a partner. I have been to around 5 meetups, but have never really talked to anyone.

    1 · October 8, 2013

    • Ruth R.

I know the feeling; I keep reserving and don't show up. Let's make this time different. Let's find each other and sketch, though I'm afraid you'll get the worst of the deal.

      1 · October 8, 2013

  • Kathryn t c.

    Hello Caren,
My name is Kathy, my friend Hans and I would be happy to "Meetup" with you at the sketching event. Please look for us and say hello ok? We have great folks in our group. I will be the one with the poke-a-dotted ruffled umbrella, smiles :-)
    See you Sunday

Would it be available to sketch at the Met in the Rodan sculpture gallery if rain?

      October 8, 2013

    • Jesse R.

Sorry, the group is too large for the Met, unfortunately. Of course, if I end up rescheduling, you're welcome to use the day to go to the Met.

      October 8, 2013

  • Kathryn t c.

Everybody bring umbrellas so it is sure not to rain! Lol! ;-) seems to work every time! Just imagine how cool those portraits would be with umbrellas!

    1 · October 7, 2013

    • Douglas H.

IPads and paper however are not rain-friendly....the latter is cheap to replace but the other one, last time I checked the Apple store....mmmmmm, not good....

      October 7, 2013

    • Douglas H.

By the way umbrellas also block the light...photo umbrellas are a different story but never compact.
