"Draftsmen's Congress" at the New Museum

This will probably be one of the most unique art events you attend ... we've been invited to participate in a new version of the "Draftsmen's Congress" - a huge room in which artists have an ongoing conversation in layers of art and paint. Bring some bold charcoal or paint - and ideas! Since most of our meetups are about drawing from life, this will present a new creative challenge for the group.

We'll meet in the lobby, at Bowery & Prince St. Admission to the museum is waived for us for this event. Please be punctual; the museum says we must enter as a group, and they will not admit latecomers. If you have any trouble finding me, give me a call or text at [masked].

What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? It's because we like to share our work, and talk, and enjoy the sights. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome!

We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another!

We take photos to share on the site later. Bring your camera!

The event usually lasts three hours, but is not rigid.

Everyone at all skill levels is welcome!

Looking forward to sketching with you!

Great fun to add our scribbles and color to the layers and layers of previous art. Thanks for bringing the colored chalks, Jesse. What I brought just didn't have enough oomph to compete with what was already on the walls. As always, thank you for finding an intriguing venue for us.

    March 5, 2014

They will have supplies there, but I've heard they're not very good quality. I recommend bringing your own - anything you like. No need for paper or pad, just drawing/painting tools.

Jesse, I'm excited to be there…I could only stay for an hour and 1/2 - I don't want to seem rude - but I would enjoy this experience even for a short time; Susan Stark has told me so much about this meet up. See you there - Susan G.

Here's a link to a video of this event made by Marl Leibowitz of the NYC Urban Sketchers the other day. If the link doesn't work just google NYC Urban Sketchers and go to the blog, it is there.

Hi, the concept of your group is what I've been looking for I.e. A place to explore my drawing skills while learning to let go of the notion that it's suppose to be perfect which I feel has kept me stuck and afraid to practice and explore through trial and error. I see kids decide to draw something in total abandonment and confidence that they can draw and create what they were inspired to. It would be nice to experience that once again.

Can you please explain further how this works, Jesse? THX

    November 6, 2013

    • Jesse R.

The invited groups comprise artists, art students, art professors, graphic designers, architects, cartoonists, engineers and other individuals who draw as part of their profession or privately as well as a diverse range of social and political groups from the local community. At the end of the Congress the work will be divided into manifold pieces and distributed to the public and the participants for free.

The Draftsmen’s Congress was previously realized as part of the 7th Berlin Biennale in 2012.
