Sketching in NY's most secret park!

Peter Detmold Park has got to be the city's most secret park! At least, it felt that way when my wife and I stumbled upon it the other day. We found a hidden staircase behind a building on a quiet street that led down to the park. I bet you've never been there, but it's a nice quiet park with plenty of seats and trees to draw, a cool arbor, an old castle-like building, and a walkway over the park that looks across the river.

We'll meet on the corner of 1st ave and 51st st, so it's easy for everyone to find, and then we'll walk to the park together.

In case of rain, I will probably just cancel the event and reschedule it later.

What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? It's because we like to share our work, and talk, and enjoy the sights. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome!

  • We sketch for a half hour or so and then share our drawings, and then sketch again, etc.
  • Feel free to bring any media you like to work with - pens, pencil, watercolor, pastel, small sketchbook or large paper, whatever suits you.
  • We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another!
  • We take photos to share on the site later. Bring your camera!
  • The event usually lasts three hours, but is not rigid.
  • The Meetup is free and everyone at all skill levels is welcome!

Looking forward to sketching with you!

Kudos to Jesse for finding the coolest (literally) outdoor space in which to spend a few hot summer hours.

Perfect opportunity to get out, explore, and draw, and we were blessed with perfect weather. Beautiful!

Went there for the first time, and it was great. I expected to bump into a group of young skilled professionals who want to show off, but it was really all-level group and that was very comforting. The only tiny minus was that each sketch was for about 45 minutes or less, and I am veeery slow, so i'd prefer about an hour, but it's OK anyways. :) Probably gonna attend the next meetup as well.
