Sketching Portraits at the Met

There are a bunch of good drawing exhibits in the Met right now - Renaissance portraiture, the history of caricaturing, and a Rembrandt/Degas exhibit. I checked them out today and scouted stuff to sketch from.

We'll meet in the lobby, at 5th Ave & 82nd. Try to be punctual; if you miss us, text me at [masked].

The Met has a suggested donation of $25. Starving artists can pay whatever they like.

What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? It's because we like to share our work, and talk, and enjoy the sights. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome!

  • We sketch for a half hour or so and then share our drawings, and then sketch again, etc.
  • It's best to bring media suited for a museum - a small sketchbook and nothing too fancy.
  • We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another!
  • We take photos to share on the site later. Bring your camera!
  • The event usually lasts three hours, but is not rigid.
  • The Meetup is free and everyone at all skill levels is welcome!

Looking forward to sketching with you!

I just became a member and see you do not have a waiting list, so if there is an opening let me know since it says here RSVPs closed.

It's true that technically only pencils are allowed, although we've never been reprimanded for using other media. Just be discreet and don't bring, say, your airbrush.

Ellie, I'm sure the issue is they don't want media which will get into the air and mess up the art on the walls -- think pastel and charcoal dust.

Yes, Adam, that's what I thought. And...accidents DO happen. Sooo, I live across from Michael's, and now have a full set of pencils, erasers, sharpeners, highlighters, a small book. Oh...if only I could draw!!!

I sketched with a ballpoint pen today and was, in fact, reprimanded by a guard, who barked "pencils only." It was totally worth it though ;)
