100th Meetup Still Life Sketchtacular!

IT'S OUR 100TH MEETUP! Can you believe it? I thought we'd try something different ... we always draw landscapes, and often figures, but what about still lifes? Still lives? Stills life?

So what are we drawing? That's up to you! The Meetup is free, but to attend, you must bring something cool to draw. (But please don't bring anything valuable. You're responsible if it gets lost or broken.) We'll mix all the items up into multiple tableaus. We'll be in a big room with multiple still life "stations" around the room to sketch. There will be refreshments, too!

This event will not be limited - the more the merrier! You can feel free to bring a friend as well - as long as they will sketch, of course. It's the perfect atmosphere for beginning artists, too.

Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]-9816.

What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? It's because we like to share our work, and talk and discuss. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome!

  • We sketch a few poses and then share our drawings, and then sketch again, etc.
  • Feel free to bring any media you like to work with - pens, pencil, watercolor, pastel, small sketchbook or large paper, whatever suits you. But if you make a mess, you have to clean it up.
  • We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another!
  • We take photos to share on the site later. Bring your camera!
  • The event will last three hours.
  • Everyone at all skill levels is welcome!

Looking forward to sketching with you!

A fabulous variation to our usual venues. What a great way to celebrate 100 meetups!

Alas, the Feb. Met Up at Met was subscribed within three hours of time/place/date posting. I made #31 on the waiting list. This is a first for me. The group has become challengingly popular.

    • Jesse R.

Susan, once we're back outdoors in the spring there won't be limits to the events! It's just the indoors ones that are hard.

This was my first one of these and I thought it was actually really fun, great set up and really great group of people of all ages and skill levels. It was a very positive energy. I'm now eagerly awaiting the next one at the Met!

I enjoyed looking at all the interesting objects people brought in. The room was a bit crowded but we made it work. thanks Jesse and cheers for the 100th meet-up!

I also hope we can repeat still life, this format

    January 13, 2013

  • Yvonne

I liked the "switch scenes" format of this meetup. Trying to get to a table that had subjects you really wanted to sketch during the changeover was a mini challenge that I also appreciated. Please do one like this again!

I agree. I would like to do this again.

This was a great and heartening event. Congrats J. And R. for running what I must guess is not only the biggest but also the best Meet Up in NYC.

Susan. I was looking for you at the end. Could you please tell me again the name of the fruit you brought. Thanks. They were such a hit with a lot of artists. Good choice.

Thanks to everyone who attended for making this an awesome 100th meetup!

I loved this Meetup! Came away totally energized. Jesse, as usual, ran a very loose and organized event at the same time. Amazing. Also amazing was how quiet a room of more than a hundred sketchers can get.

I loved it! A great idea (bringing objects to draw). Very friendly atmosphere. Thanks!

    Wowy, wow, wow! So fun!
Jesse, Rachel, and Jesse's 50% look-a-like parent did a fantastic job of orchestrating this very large group. I loved the tableaus on many small tables, the idea of leaving ones drawing on ones chair for review, and the baby carrots! I especially liked the musical chairs aspect of drawing a different tableau each time. You guys really outdid yourselves.

Jesse, thanks for the reply. I prefer drawing with a smaller group, but I know this event will be something really special. Enjoy!

    January 12, 2013

  • Pam

I'm really looking forward to this! Will there be chairs to sit on while drawing for those who, like me, have trouble standing for a long time? Or may I bring a small stool to sit on?

    January 10, 2013

    • Jesse R.

No worries, there will be chairs, Pam.

      January 10, 2013

  • Jewel

Hello Jesse (all)- I'm concerned about the possible number of attendees; even a fraction would be a lot of folks! Are we going to use the ceiling?

    January 8, 2013

    • Jesse R.

Please do not worry; we have rented a large space and planned for a large number.

      1 · January 8, 2013

Hi! I am bringing some kind of vase and fake flowers. They are tall flowers, shades of pink, and whatever flowers I can find. I think I may have some pussywillows. They will be fun to draw.

That would be great!!! Planning to try on this Saturday. :)

What types of things are people bringing to be sketched? Really wondering what I can drag down there! :)

Fruit and vegetables are always good for still life practice.

      January 6, 2013

    • Yvonne

Oh, I've got my thing. And it will be the only one of its kind in the entire room. I'll bet on it! ;D

      January 6, 2013

  • Athalia

I'm new to the group:) Just wondering how the event is organized, like the sharing and discussion part, with so many people attending

    January 5, 2013

    • Jesse R.

Hi Athalia (and everyone) - there's no formal discussion or critique. After an introduction, we'll sketch for 30/45 minutes, then put all the art down to take a look. People chat and talk about what they like casually while looking (but there's so much art that no one knows whose art is whose unless you ask). And I take photos of the art to share on the site afterwards. Then we sketch again and repeat a few times!

      January 5, 2013

  • Lori

Hello, I've just joined the group. Wish I could make 1/12 (sounds like fun) but must work that day. Really hope to be at the next one!

    January 1, 2013

  • Susan S.

I'm going to Whole Foods where the selection of art-worthy produce is superb year 'round.

    December 31, 2012

  • Yvonne

I would bring my cat, but I don't think she'd be too cool with that idea. lol. Would be a cool subject, though. She's every single color that a cat can possibly be!

    1 · December 18, 2012

    • Yvonne

LMAO! I wasn't serious! ha. She is 100% an indoors cat. She'd freak the moment I tried to put her in the carrier - she hates going outside! Funny, though... I wouldn't want to traumatize my little boobie like that... not even for art! :D

      December 31, 2012

  • Carl Z.

responding to Yvonne and her cat:

please don't bring your cat, i'm HIGHLY ALLERGIC to felines... i would end-up inthe hospital at my 1st MEETING with the Central Park Sketching Group. thanks,

p.s. bring a photo of your precious pet. i'm bringing a picture of Santa's Helper, my new great grandson!
