I have been going to Presov to search for family since 1992. I have been there 8 times. In 1997 a friend who is Slovak took us to the Presov Archives where we found information on my grandfather and his family. My family is Jewish so the information was kept in microfilm but it was still very helpful. My grandfather was actually from Brezovica but still in the district that the archives cover. Since then I have gone to different town halls to see if there was any information, but since my family is Jewish there was no records other than in Presov. Back in 1992 and 1997 there were not many people speaking English and since my friend speaks English fluently and knows some Hungarian she was able to help me. As the records were written in Hungarian.
In the last two years I have joined www.ancestry.com
and bought a world membership. I was able to find the same records I saw in 1997 online. But it takes a lot of digging as names were misspelled or dates I had were incorrect. It is well worth it to do the research online as suggested by others.
You must visit Kosice too. They have a beautiful cathedral - Dom svatej Alzbety and the old town square is magnificent. My friends live in a flat there and we just love staying with them and walking up and down the main street and going to the little shops in the side streets.
Also, the last time we went to Kosice/Presov we flew to Budapest and it is much cheaper and renting and driving a car is fine. If you take that route you should also spend a couple of days in Budapest.
If you need anymore information, feel free to ask. I haven't been to Presov or Kosice since 2011 but plan to go again next year.
